It is said, "of." It is said that when meditating in this way, "all beings" refers to all sentient beings belonging to the three realms, with a mind of loving-kindness focused on the mind that desires happiness and is delighted to be free from harm. If the mind is established in this way, what will happen? It is said, "The mind is bound by the mud of attachment." When wishing for happiness with a mind of loving-kindness, craving attachment associated with the mind of rejoicing will arise. That itself is the place where the mind is attached and immersed, so it is mud. In this way, the mind will be completely bound. This teaches that with a mind of loving-kindness accompanied by joy, a pervasive clinging to attachment will arise towards beings, so that itself is a fault. So how should it be accomplished? Therefore, it is said, "To purify the stain of the mud of attachment." Attachment is the clinging to things that appear. That itself is the cause of samsara, so it is like mud. That itself is a stain, that is, the fault of clinging to oneself and one's own mind. To purify and cleanse such a stain, what should be done? It is said, "If it is washed with the water of equanimity." One should know with the mind of wisdom that attachment, like the stain of mud, is a fault, and wash away and remove the stain with the water of equanimity, which is without regard for all beings and free from subsequent attachment and hatred. What fault will there be then? There, it is the one who eliminates the suffering of all beings.

Seeing those sufferings, when practicing and manifesting compassion, a great mental pain called "sorrow arising from compassion" will arise in my mind. Alas, these sentient beings are all immersed in suffering! This sorrowful mind will become very painful. This is its meaning. So what should be done? If one relies on joy to calm this pain, then, as it is said, "If one relies on joy to calm it, the wavering mind will become proud." Like this, when the mind indulges in the realm of joy, because of elevating that mind that wavers and changes on the object, it will become proud and complacent, and will not remain calm. If one relies on other methods to calm it? As it is said, "If one generates aversion to calm joy, then the mind will involuntarily become depressed." In order to calm the mind that is proud because of joy, if one focuses on things that generate aversion, such as the sight of suffering, etc., thereby generating aversion, then, at that moment, due to the cause of generating aversion, the mind will involuntarily become depressed, unable to focus on the target, and the effort will become weak. This is its meaning. If that is the case, what fault will there be in elevating oneself with joy? As it is said, "If one diligently elevates the inferior, pride will become the playground of the enemy." and so on. Even if in any way, through diligence and effort, one makes that depressed and inferior mind generate pride, there will be fault. What is it? One will be controlled by pride. It will become the playground of enemies like pride and even greater pride, destroying virtuous wealth, and be controlled by them. That is to say, one will become a slave to that enemy called pride. This is its meaning. Like this, when focusing on the four Brahmaviharas, the faults of the mind are pointed out. Now, in order to point out the faults that arise when relying on the antidote to pride,

Therein, meditate on emptiness of all. It is said that, in order to eliminate the enemy of pride, as its antidote, eliminating all the realms of mind, all is emptiness. By meditating on the emptiness of all pervasive and non-pervasive things completely disintegrating, all unfavorable aspects such as pride will be reversed, which is the nature of mutual exclusion, like darkness and light. Or the nature of non-coexistence, like the object of colored matter, a vase and woolen cloth. Here, eliminating the non-coexistence of colored matter is to meditate on the meaning of emptiness. So, what will happen when meditating on the meaning of emptiness? There, one will not be diligent in the benefit of others. It is said that, in the state of meditating on emptiness of all, since oneself and sentient beings are not the object, one will not be diligent and exert effort in maturing other beings and doing things for sentient beings, but will turn away from that. What will be the object if it becomes a fault like that? Why? If one relies on the conventional for that. It is said that, empty
