The deeds have been narrated. What is called "one's own accomplishment" is one's own accomplishment. Whatever virtuous deeds there are, they are practiced in this way, for the sake of dispelling the oppression of others. For example, being possessed of the fear of going to hell, one first experiences happiness and then... ༄. Spoken by the son of the gods: O kings who possess compassion! Your minds should be well devoted. Thus, it should also be given to others as appropriate. Because of abiding in one, accomplishment is excellent; there is no one who has transcended it, which means there is no one who has not transcended it. This explains the lack of self-mastery. Now, let us explain in what way he performed austerities: How you, to those who do harm, Do benefit to the utmost in such a way, That people, even to those who do benefit, Do not do benefit to the utmost in such a way. The meaning of "do benefit to the utmost" has already been explained. The phrase "to those who do harm" means that not only did he benefit Śuddhodana and others, but also Devadatta and others who were intent on doing harm. You are the Bhagavan. Just as you do benefit to the utmost, so it is not the case that people do benefit to those who do benefit. Devadatta, the Bhagavan's brother, made vows to harm others and always bestowed what was not beneficial. The Bhagavan always did what was beneficial, and what is called benefit is the Dharma. Furthermore: You are to the enemy who does harm, A virtuous friend who does benefit, To those who always seek faults, A person who seeks only virtues. The phrase "You are to the enemy who does harm" and so forth is praise. Harm means doing harm. The enemy who does harm is the assembly of heretics such as Pūraṇa Kassapa and others. You do benefit, which means you do good deeds; that is the virtuous friend. One who always seeks faults is one who always seeks faults. One who always seeks faults is the best of men and so forth, and one who seeks only virtues is one who possesses the seeking of virtue. This verse explains doing benefit to the utmost to those who do harm, doing benefit to the utmost to those who seek benefit, and seeking only virtues to those who seek faults.
