The so-called "good speech" is to explain good speech. Wherever there is speech of good speech, that is good speech, meaning "clear speech." If the language is clear, wouldn't it be unimportant like using charming rhetoric, etc.? Answer: The importance lies in its ability to clearly show noble realms and liberation. The words of sages like Kapila are also clear in the same way, but because they elucidate inverted meanings, they must be distinguished. The so-called "truth" means not inverted. Most untrue words are pleasant to the ear, and these words are both pleasant and audible, meaning they belong to the category of what can be heard. Using language truthfully is to accommodate beings of small, medium, and sharp faculties. Therefore, whatever possesses profound, clear, and both meanings is language that is both profound, clear, and possesses both meanings. Among them, what corresponds to the meaning of dependent arising is profound, that is, able to devour. Giving, etc., corresponding to the meaning of lightness is the meaning of clarity. What corresponds to the meaning of the words of dependent arising, etc., is the meaning of both. Brevity is summarizing, for example, "Monks, you should abandon forms, etc." Extensive explanation is detailed elaboration, for example, "Monks, form is not self. If form were self, form would not bring harm and suffering." Whatever possesses both of these is both brief and extensive, which is to accommodate beings who like brevity and extensive explanation. The so-called "who" is because it is impossible. The so-called "unchanging" is not changing. The so-called "hearing" is after hearing. The so-called "speech" refers to the Sutra Pitaka and the Vinaya Pitaka expressed in songs, etc. The so-called "such" is possessing the aspect as spoken. The so-called "yours" is yours. The so-called "yours" refers to the Bhagavan (World Honored One). "Not only followers and those of middling ability, but even enemies..." This sentence is the meaning of the word "also." Because he knows everything, he is called "Omniscient." The so-called "certainty" is the cause of certainty. Like these two verses, it is all about the words of the Bhagavan...

To be completely clear about all knowledge is the explanation of the first division. Furthermore, many pills are not pleasing to the ear; a little modification makes them pleasing. Because your speech accomplishes its purpose, everything is only well-spoken. 'Many pills are not pleasing to the ear' is the extensive statement. 'Many' means mostly pleasing to the ear, conforming to what is heard and followed. 'All speech' will be explained. 'A little modification' means that for those who are attached to the enjoyment of desirable pleasures, one cannot gather them with speech that is in accordance with that. The meaning is that speech with a little modification is not pleasing to the ear. For example, it is said to show fear of existence attached to desirable pleasures: 'In that which is burning like that, what joy and happiness is there? Why does one who dwells in darkness not seek a lamp?' That is the example. Others say that modified speech is not pleasing to the ear. For example, the Blessed One said to Devadatta: 'Foolish one, if I do not entrust the monastic community of monks even to Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, what need is there to mention entrusting it to you? Because you will become the son of a Shākya slave girl, a person named Ambastha, eating the saliva of dogs.' Therefore, the Blessed One, with compassion, spoke to those who are worthy to be subdued, who possess unbearable thoughts. But that is neither unpleasant nor harsh, because the mind is free from afflictions. The meaning of 'speech' has already been explained. 'Accomplishing the purpose' is for the sake of accomplishing the purpose of higher realms and liberation. The word 'also' indicates another meaning. 'All' refers to pleasant and unpleasant. 'Well-spoken' means well-spoken. Such verses are the pleasant words of the Shākyas; this is the explanation of the second division. Now, that itself will be explained: 'If your speech is analyzed, whether it is gentle or harsh, or whether it possesses both, everything becomes of one taste.' What is gentle? It will be explained as pleasing speech. What is it like? As it is said in the Root Exposition Sutra.
