Namo. Therefore, I (referring to the "I" as stated by the Vaisheshika school) am different from the "I" as stated by the Samkhya school. It is not like the Samkhya school's view that the self-nature of the purusha is cognitive. "Pervasive" means pervading everything. "Should be fully stated" means that from various kinds of knowledge, the purusha is different from knowledge and is pervasive. What does this mean? It means that the great sage, named Eat-Crumb, who is the author of the Vaisheshika treatises, thinks like this: If the purusha were of the nature of awareness, then it would become impermanent, and I must acknowledge that the purusha is permanent. Therefore, the purusha is not cognitive, but knowledge is of the nature of awareness. Knowledge, by approaching objects, approaches the purusha with the image of the objects. Moreover, because knowledge is pervasive and permanent, there is no fault here. Your, etc. If that were the case, then it would become like wood because it has no knowledge. This is what he said. Because if the purusha does not know anything at all, then grass and trees, etc., also do not know anything at all. If that were the case, then grass and trees, etc., and I (the purusha), would have no difference from each other. Here it says: If the purusha is ignorant, then it should not be said that it is different from trees and grass, etc. Because they are the same in ignorance, how can one say that one of them is mindless? If the self-nature of the purusha is permanent, then what kind of permanence is it? How can creation and enjoyment, etc., be said to be permanent? Such faults are bound to exist in this treatise. Therefore, this view is not accepted by the wise. Just like the measure of the body of a naked person, etc. "Naked person" refers to the Jainas. "The measure of the body" means the body, that is, the measure of form. Therefore, just like the measure of the body, that is, in accordance with the measure of the body. That is to say, for the extremely small, it is extremely small; for the large, it is large. "Life" means that it pervades the entire body, and the body exists like its calyx. Therefore, if this shrinks, then that will also shrink; if this grows, then that will also grow. That is to say, shrinking

"Pa" means gathering. Where does it exist? "Chopa" means stretching. That is life, existence, and self, they say. Life, or birth, or nurture, or person, or purusha, these are names. "Saying" means that the naked ones' teacher says so. That is, like the bull king and growth, etc., the twenty-five naked ones' annihilationist teachers declare and speak like this. "You," etc., you say that life and existence are destruction and impermanence. Why? Because the word "one-sided" is spoken. Whoever has one side is one-sided, meaning having parts. A partless side cannot be a substance of matter. Whatever has sides is impermanent. For example, the body and life are considered one-sided. Therefore, this is also impermanent like having parts. Because the body that is one-sided with it is impermanent. Permanence and having parts are illogical and contradict valid cognition. Here, the summarized verse is: If one side is permanent, how can it be? If it is permanent, then it is not one-sided. There are not two kinds of relationship of matter. Therefore, this treatise is unreasonable. "The Brahmins are the cause of beings," etc. "Brahmin" means like Jaimini, etc., the experts of treatises of logicians, etc. They believe that the cause is the purusha. What is the cause? It says, "The cause of beings," that is, the cause of the entire world. Moreover, because the purusha existing in the lineage of Devadatta is the cause of Devadatta himself, not of sacrifices, etc., this is the established tenet. "Cause" means the cause of producing. What kind of cause? It says, "The purusha is permanent." Purusha and self, the meaning is not different. "Permanent" means unchanging. Because seeds, etc., also become causes, but that is not permanent. Therefore, it is distinguished by that difference. "Examine" means
