It is especially excellent because merely saying that one relies on you will certainly bring suffering. That is what is said. The way these enter through conditions is as follows: For example, just as one who is without the sense of hearing cannot enjoy or hear subtle sounds, similarly, those who are without fortune (163) do not hear the Buddha's voice, and all the characteristics of sound, even if they have obtained a divine ear, do not enter their ears, just as some do. Likewise, the Buddha's Dharma, which is extremely subtle and profound, supremely peaceful, and the object of experience only for quiescent wisdom, does not enter the ears of all those to be tamed, but only enters the ears of some who are without afflictions, whose minds are supremely excellent, and who possess great fortune. That is what is said. There are four ways to ascertain the pervasiveness of wisdom and compassion through the example of clouds: combining the Dharma that accords with the growth of crops, combining the Dharma that accords with the transformation of vessels, combining the Dharma that is without dependence, and combining the Dharma that pacifies fires. Among the two ways of combining the Dharma that accords with the growth of crops, the first is to briefly explain it in a way that is effortless: For example, just as in the summer season, from the gathering of great clouds, the collection of rainwater, which is the cause of the abundant growth of crops for farmers, effortlessly descends upon the earth, similarly, from the clouds of immeasurable great compassion, the great rain of the supreme Dharma of the all-knowing Buddhas, which is the cause of the growth of inexhaustible virtuous crops for the field of beings, spontaneously descends without the thought of motivation or effort. That is what is said. The explanation of how it enters through conditions is as follows: For example, just as when worldly beings enter the path of virtuous actions and act with mindfulness, the rainwater gradually descends from the clouds that arise from the gentle breeze blown by the power of the gods (164), similarly, when the virtuous actions of those to be tamed, such as faith and diligence, increase significantly, the Buddhas cause the great rain of the supreme Dharma to descend from the clouds blown by the wind of great compassion. Thus, the clouds and

The reason for similarity is that, in order to benefit the fields of those to be tamed who dwell in cyclic existence, relying on the possession of genuine, non-deceptive wisdom and great compassion. Because wisdom can realize all selflessness, it is not tainted by the faults of wandering in cyclic existence; because compassion can embrace all sentient beings, it is not tainted by the faults of not wandering in nirvana. Abiding in the midst of space, the cloud of the Complete and Perfect Buddha, the Lord of Sages, who has become the pure essence of stainless concentration and limitless doors of dharani, is the cause for increasing the inexhaustible harvest of virtue. That is the meaning of what was said above. There are two ways in which vessels transform things. For example: Just as when rain falls from the sky, it is cool to the touch, its taste is delicious and sweet, it is gentle because it does not harm the body, it is light because it is easy to strike, it is very clean and has no odor, and even if drunk in large quantities, it does not harm the stomach or the throat. This water, which has eight qualities and the same taste, gradually emerges from the cloud and falls, and because it is associated with different places such as those below that contain or do not contain salt, it transforms into very many different tastes and potencies such as snow and sweetness. The meaning is: Similarly, when the Buddha teaches the Dharma, the supreme Dharma, the profound Suchness that possesses the eight branches of the Noble Path, the rain of water of the same taste, gradually emerges and falls from the essence of the vast and extensive cloud of great compassion, and because of the distinctions of the elements, intentions, and faculties of the beings to be tamed, it transforms into possessing many different tastes such as the three vehicles. That is the meaning of what was said above. There are three ways of not depending on things. Among them, three examples briefly illustrate: All the Dharmas of the Buddhas, in the form of the rain of the Dharma of the Supreme Vehicle with the same taste of Suchness, cause the masses of sentient beings who are extremely joyful and have definite faith, as well as the masses of sentient beings who are uncertain, remaining between faith and non-faith, and the masses of sentient beings who are hateful and have wrong views due to disbelief, to be, in order, like: When rain falls, people rejoice and generate faith, and
