Because the six superknowledges pierce through the obscurations to knowledge, which are like strong armor, they are similar to a vajra. And because the power of the three superknowledges—wisdom such as meditative absorption, as well as the superknowledges of remembering previous lives and the divine eye—destroys the obscurations to meditative absorption (126), which are like strong walls, they are similar to a vajra. And because the single power of the exhaustion of defilements cuts through the obscurations to the afflictions, which are like dense forests, it is similar to a vajra. This is what is meant. Fearlessness has two aspects: identifying the nature of the meaning and ascertaining it through examples. Meaning has two aspects. The nature is: In the past, too, through the door of equanimity of mind, without stinginess, teaching the Dharma, based on one's own benefit, knowing all the Dharmas as they are and as many as there are, through the manner of directly realizing them, oneself directly and completely awakening, this is fearlessness. In the past, too, relying on the path to cut off obstructing Dharmas, based on the benefit of others, proclaiming that the afflictions such as attachment, which are obstacles to attaining liberation, must be eliminated, this is fearlessness. In the past, too, entering the path of purifying faith in white Dharmas, based on the benefit of others, proclaiming all the paths of the three vehicles that will definitely lead to liberation from samsara, this is fearlessness. In the past, too, without arrogance, teaching the Dharma, based on one's own benefit, promising to attain the cessation of the exhaustion of all that should be abandoned, this is fearlessness. Thus, based on the four meanings, taking a vow in the supreme position, roaring the lion's roar in the assembly, turning the wheel of Dharma in the realm of Brahma, through asceticism, lineage, enjoyment, ability, and non-attachment, I (127) have conquered the heretics, Brahmins, gods, demons, Brahma, and so forth. Because no one has refuted or truly seen a sign of refutation in accordance with the Dharma, therefore, having attained physical well-being, fearless speech, and fearless mind, the qualities of fearlessness of the Buddhas are fourfold. This is what is meant. The function is: Relying on having attained the four fearlessnesses, oneself and others

English

Based on their meaning, one pledges to have known all aspects of knowable things, such as suffering, and teaches all knowable dharmas, such as suffering, so that others may also know them; one pledges to have abandoned all that should be abandoned, such as the origins of actions and afflictions, and teaches all the dharmas that obstruct the origin, so that others may also abandon them; one pledges to have cultivated all aspects of the path truth that should be cultivated, and teaches all the dharmas of the path that lead to definite liberation, so that others may also cultivate them; one pledges to have attained the pure truth of cessation, which is immaculate and utterly stainless, possessing both purities, and teaches the dharma of cessation, which is the exhaustion of defilements, so that others may also attain it. Therefore, because one pledges to have fully realized (128), and in order that others may also realize it as it is, one teaches the Four Noble Truths, and therefore there is never any fear. The great sages, the perfect Buddhas, enter without obstruction into the preaching of the sacred Dharma in any gathering of ascetics, Brahmins, and so on. This is to be ascertained by example: Just as the lion, the king of beasts, dwells constantly at the edge of a dense forest without fear, and roams without fear of tigers, elephants, and other powerful beasts, because it dwells well, does not depend on others, is steadfast in mind, and possesses perfect skill. Similarly, in a gathering of many arrogant ascetics and Brahmins, the Lion of the Shakyas, the Buddha, is without fear or dread, and dwells well because he has become the supreme self, is independent because he does not rely on others, is steadfast in mind because he is always in equanimity, and possesses perfect skill because he has abandoned even the most subtle things to be abandoned. This is how it is said. Non-confusion has two aspects: the showing of the actual meaning.
