Just as with an image made of refined pure gold, having realized that the nature of mind, the Tathagatagarbha, which is the quiescence of afflictions from the very beginning, pervades all sentient beings, and by teaching the Dharma in accordance with each individual's capacity, like using a tool to clear away mud, by accomplishing this, the obscurations that cause the self-nature to become manifest, the adventitious stains, are cleared away. That is the meaning. In brief, showing the beginningless nature is: like a lotus with a bad color, like a living bee, like the chaff of grain, like unclean mud, like the earth, like the bark of a tree, like rotten, dirty clothes, like a woman's womb, and even like the hollow of black mud, these are examples representing stains. Like a Buddha adorned with marks and signs, like honey possessing flavor and essence, like the essence of rice and so forth, like an unchangeable gold ore, like a great inexhaustible treasure, like a tree laden with fruit, like a beautiful precious statue, like a king ruling with the wheel, like an image of pure gold, these are examples representing the essence. The examples that closely approximate these are: the realm of sentient beings, the sheaths of afflictions that obscure the Thusness, although adventitious due to the connection of self-nature, are also present together with the Dharmadhatu from beginningless time. Wherever those are present, the self-nature of the mind of sentient beings, the Tathagatagarbha, together with the co-emergent wisdom that is primordially without stain, is said to be present from beginningless time. That is what is said. Combining the common properties of both stains and essence, there are two ways: particularly depicting the adventitious stains, and particularly depicting the self-nature Dharmadhatu. There are four ways of depicting stains: differentiating the obscuring stains, how it obscures the realm of beings, elaborately combining the respective examples and meanings, and again summarizing them into a common meaning. Among these, differentiating the obscuring stains is: the Dharma of

The adventitious stains that obscure the naturally pure, can be summarized into nine types according to their kind. Namely, those that exist in the continuum of those who are free from worldly desire, which are the cause of unwavering actions, accomplishing the form and formless realms, and which are to be destroyed by transcendent wisdom, are the latent predispositions of desire, the latent predispositions of hatred, and the latent predispositions of pride and ignorance; from these bad states, each of the three seeds is enumerated; those that exist in the continuum of those who have not separated from desire, etc. (70), which are the cause of meritorious and non-meritorious actions, accomplishing only the desire realm, and which are to be destroyed by the wisdom of meditating on the unattractive, etc., are the intense arising of desire, hatred, and ignorance, combining the three manifest poisons into one; those that exist in the continuum of the Arhats, which are the cause of engaging in uncontaminated actions, accomplishing the mind-made body, and which are to be destroyed by the wisdom of great Bodhi, are those gathered by the imprints of ignorance; those that commonly exist in the continuum of ordinary beings who are learning, which are to be destroyed by the wisdom that directly sees the truth of the nature of phenomena, are what are to be abandoned by seeing; those that exist in the continuum of noble learners, who have already directly seen the nature of phenomena, which are to be destroyed by the wisdom of the path of meditation, are what are to be abandoned by meditation; especially, those that exist in the continuum of Bodhisattvas who have not reached the ultimate, the opposing factors from the first to the seventh bhumis, which are to be destroyed by the wisdom of the three pure bhumis, are what are to be abandoned based on the impure bhumis; those that exist in the continuum of Bodhisattvas who have reached the ultimate, the opposing factors of the three pure bhumis, which are to be destroyed by the vajra-like samadhi, are what are to be abandoned based on the pure bhumis. Thus, in order to easily understand purity, the pure stains of desire, etc., are represented by the nine examples of the lotus receptacle and bees, etc., in the order in which they appear (71).
