Having seen all with a special eye, in order to purify the afflictions that are like mud, he pours down the sacred Dharma like rain and teaches it to the beings who are to be tamed. So it is said. Again, it is said: Just as a good gold that has fallen and been lost in unclean, rotten filth is later seen by the gods, and in order to completely purify that unclean mud, having seen it, they earnestly show that extremely beautiful gold to people. Similarly, the perfect Buddha Victorious One also sees that beings have fallen into many afflictions that are like a great unclean mud, and that the essence of the perfect Buddha, the Thusness, is like a jewel pervading sentient beings, and in order to purify the adventitious stains of afflictions in that space, he teaches the sacred Dharma to embodied beings who are to be tamed, in accordance with their capacity. So it is said. Like a great treasure on the earth, the example of the abiding nature of the Dharmadhatu in sentient beings is: Just as some poor people who are afflicted by hunger and poverty have a great treasure of jewels in their own home, under the ground covered by many lands, which has inexhaustible enjoyments of whatever they desire. However, that poor person does not know that the great treasure is in his own house. The treasure also does not say to that person, 'I am here under the ground, dig me up and enjoy whatever you like.' Therefore, even though there is a treasure of jewels, they still experience the suffering of poverty. So it is said. Its meaning is: Similarly, the essence of the Tathagatagarbha, which is like a treasure of jewels contained within the minds of sentient beings, is naturally completely pure (62) and stainless, without the need to newly establish true qualities, and without the need to remove pre-existing faults, the nature of the Dharma abiding in its own nature, is obscured by adventitious stains, and because it is not realized to be inherently present, therefore, being poor in the wealth of uncontaminated qualities, the suffering of existence, which is manifold and infinite, is constantly and unceasingly experienced by many beings. So it is said. Again, it is said: Just as a poor person

Just as beneath the foundation of a house, a vast treasure of inexhaustible jewels is buried, yet the poor person, even though the treasure is there, is not told by the treasure, "I am here," and that person does not know that the treasure is in their own home, and thus cannot escape the suffering of poverty. Similarly, although the treasure of the Dharmadhatu, endowed with limitless, undefiled qualities, abides in the house of one's own mind, sentient beings do not know this, and are like poor people who have treasure but cannot find it. Just as some wise people teach the method of extracting treasure, in order for those sentient beings who can be tamed to extract the treasure of the Dharmadhatu from beneath the adventitious stains, and thereby manifestly attain the Dharmakaya endowed with twofold purity, in limitless realms of the world, great sages, perfect Buddhas, are born and teach the sacred Dharma. That is what is said. The example of the Dharmadhatu nature residing in sentient beings like a sprout in a husk is: For example, the seeds contained within the husks of fruits of trees such as mangoes and palmyra (63), if they encounter the right conditions, will sprout, and those with the nature of not being destroyed by obstacles, if they have fertile land that is well-tilled, water that is given in due time, abundant fertilizer, and so forth, endowed with these favorable conditions, will gradually grow into a king of trees endowed with perfect substance. That is what is said. Its meaning is: The afflictions of sentient beings, such as ignorance, are like the pod of a fruit husk, within which the pure Dharmadhatu or element, the Tathagatagarbha, is contained, and just as a tree gradually grows because of complete conditions, through accumulating the merit and wisdom of the two accumulations, and relying on that to gradually traverse the grounds and paths, one will eventually become the nature of the King of Sages, the perfect Buddha. That is what is said. Again, it is said: For example, the water that moistens, the sunlight that ripens, the wind that prevents decay, the earth that holds, and the warm seasons such as spring, and the space that provides opportunity, and so forth, are the conditions.
