The body of the Tathagata, burning and bright with thousands of splendors, is well seen by those with unobstructed divine eyes and clairvoyance, and, in order to show it to others, it is like taking the Buddha's body out from the folds of a lotus. That is the meaning. What it symbolizes is: Similarly, the Dharmakaya of the Sugata, which is naturally pure (57), pervades even the beings dwelling in the Avici hell. With the eye of Buddha's wisdom, seeing that all beings, self and others, possess the nature of the Tathagatagarbha, without any obscuration, and remaining in the same state as samsara until the end of time, the lords of great compassion who wish to benefit beings, in order to clearly show the Dharmadhatu to others, gradually liberate those who are to be tamed from the obscuring adventitious defilements. That is the meaning. Again, it is said: For example, when the lotus flower of unpleasant color is closed, the body of the Sugata, adorned with marks and signs, which is present within it, is seen by those with divine eye clairvoyance to be present within the lotus. In order to make the Buddha's body manifest, they must cut and remove the obscuring petals. Similarly, seeing that the Tathagatagarbha Dharmadhatu of the complete Buddha, obscured by the infinite folds of adventitious defilements such as afflictions, attachment, and hatred, is present in all beings, with immeasurable compassion for those who have not realized it, the Mighty One also engages in activity in order to surely destroy the adventitious defilements and afflictions that obscure beings, just as he removes the obscuring lotus petals of the Buddha's body. That is the meaning. Just as honey is to bees, so is the way the Dharmadhatu abides in beings. For example, just as honey, which is completely surrounded and protected by a swarm of living bees (58) and possesses a wealth of delicious essence, is seen by a person skilled in discerning honey and who actually needs honey to be present in the center covered by bees.

Just as honey is obtained by completely separating it from the swarm of bees through various methods such as smoking. That is the meaning. The great sage, the Complete Buddha, directly knows all aspects of knowledge with the eye of a Buddha, sees that the wisdom to be realized by each Tathagata is like honey pervading everything, and shows the path of completely abandoning the obscurations of that realm, the temporary defilements like bees, along with their seeds, thus making the Dharmakaya manifest. That is the meaning. Again, it is explained: Just as a person seeking honey sees abundant honey obscured by billions of bees, removes those outer bees by various means, and then uses the honey for medicine and food as he wishes, so too, the nature of the minds of sentient beings, the uncontaminated wisdom, the Tathagatagarbha, is like the essence of honey, and the temporary defilements, the afflictions, are like bees. The Victorious One, the Complete Buddha, who is skilled in the means of destroying these and making the Dharmadhatu manifest, is like the person who collects honey. That is the meaning. Like the essence in the husk, the example of the Dharmadhatu's state in sentient beings (page 59): Just as the essence of grains such as rice, which is contained in an outer husk, is not a good thing to be enjoyed by people as long as it is not separated from the husk, but once separated from the husk, it becomes the best of foods and so on. Therefore, those who seek enjoyable things such as food and drink extract the essence of the grain from within the outer husk. That is the meaning. Similarly, the naturally pure essence of the Victorious, Complete Buddha, which is mixed with the temporary defilements of sentient beings, as long as it is not separated from the obscuring defilements of afflictions, the Victorious Tathagata

The enlightened activities and boundless deeds do not manifest in the three realms of desire, form, and formlessness. Being free from obscurations, the activities of the Buddha naturally expand. That is what is said. Explaining further: For example, rice with its husk, and grains like buckwheat and barley, do not come from their respective husks. If the essence is not refined and made suitable for consumption, people cannot enjoy it, nor can it become food with good qualities like delicious taste. Similarly, the Tathagatagarbha, the sovereign of all dharmas, which pervades the nature of sentient beings, if the body or form is not liberated from the husk-like afflictions, then beings afflicted and tormented by endless suffering like affliction and hunger, will not receive the joy of the sacred Dharma and the great taste of bliss. Only by abandoning afflictions can the vast Dharma be taught. That is what is said. Like gold in filth, the example of the state of the Dharmadhatu in sentient beings: For example, when people are walking on the streets, someone has a large lump of gold, but due to negligence, they lose it in a place filled with filthy, rotten garbage. However, the nature of the gold does not change, it does not perish, and that good gold remains in that place as it was before. After many hundreds of years, a deity with pure divine eyes sees the gold in that place, and out of compassion, says to someone: 'Take this good gold, which is in an impure place, it is the best of jewels. Cleanse the outer mud and use this jewel to make statues, ornaments, etc., as you wish!' That is what is said. Its meaning is: Similarly, the Victorious Shakyamuni also sees the qualities of sentient beings who are immersed in the sudden filth of afflictions, like impure things, the true nature of the Dharmadhatu, like good gold.
