The complete abandonment of the two obscurations along with their habitual tendencies is called Nirvana. Thus, the ultimate realization is termed the Perfect Buddha, and (51) the ultimate abandonment is termed the Non-Abiding Nirvana. These are merely different names, because they perfectly converge into the single meaning of the Tathagatagarbha (Buddha-nature). For the sake of the sacred realm of the noble wisdom, in the uncontaminated sphere of reality, it is indivisible, inseparable, and non-dual. Thus it is said. The meaning of Nirvana is: vast and complete with all lineages, possessing all aspects of qualities without exception; clear and boundless, immeasurable, thus possessing countless qualities; profound and difficult to fathom, thus possessing inconceivable qualities; the two obscurations along with their habitual tendencies are completely purified, thus possessing stainless qualities, etc.; in the uncontaminated sphere of reality, the Dharma-kaya (Body of Truth) with the characteristic of non-differentiation is directly realized, which is called liberation, the ultimate Nirvana. Whatever is the nature of liberation, from the aspect of directly realizing Suchness (Tathata), it is also the Tathagata (Thus-Gone One). Thus it is said. To ascertain these through examples, there is the example of painting and the example of the sun. Among them, the example of painting is: for example, painters who draw images of deities and so on, each skilled in the distinctions of various limbs such as the head and hands, if one of the painters who is skilled in any one limb such as the head leaves, then his part cannot be determined and drawn. This is a general explanation (52). Then, after some time, the great sovereign king commanded those painters, saying, 'All of you completely draw my image on this canvas.' After the canvas was given, and that command was heard, each of them diligently engaged in the task of drawing whatever image they were skilled in. Among those who were diligently engaged in drawing, if one who was skilled in the head left that place and went to another place, then because the one who drew the head had gone to another place, there was only one painter.

Because of that flaw, just as a statue of a king's body, all limbs including the head cannot be completely perfect, this example is used in the Sutra Requested by Ratnakuta to illustrate this meaning. What is the meaning that many painters closely represent in order to completely depict those limbs? It is the giving without attachment to anything, the discipline without the stain of faults, the patience without ever being disturbed, and so on, with the word "so on" including the diligence that delights in virtue, the meditation that is single-pointed on the object, and the wisdom that thoroughly distinguishes the Dharma. Emptiness endowed with all the best of skillful means, manifested as the Dharmakaya, is said to be like a well-painted and complete statue of a king. That's what it says. In short, even if one painter is missing, the painting will not be complete, and it is only when all are complete that it can be completed. Similarly, even if one aspect of skillful means is missing, the qualities will not be complete, and it is only when all are complete that all the qualities will be completely accomplished. And the liberation and nirvana that are inseparable from these are the ultimate fruit, which is the same for all. That's what it says. Using the example of the sun, it is shown that the sun is compared to nirvana by four similarities, and that there is no ultimate nirvana other than the Buddha. Among them, the similarity to the sun is that the wisdom that is inseparable from the four qualities, and the wisdom and liberation, in order, because they make it clear, radiate, and purify, and because there is no difference between the three, they are the same as the light, the radiating rays, and the pure solar disk, and the non-difference of these three. That's what it says. The reason why there is no ultimate nirvana other than the Buddha is that the element that has existed from beginningless time, the naturally pure realm, the Tathagatagarbha, is inseparable from all the true qualities such as power, and its manifestation is the ultimate liberation, therefore, without obtaining the perfect Buddha with the wisdom eye that is unattached to all knowable objects, obscurations
