Just as the wind supports the water, the non-virtuous thoughts are the cause of birth in samsara, and the afflictions such as desire greatly open and increase the opportunity. Just as the great earth is formed from churning the mass of water, from the water of karma and affliction arise the aggregates, sense bases, and elements, as well as births accompanied by suffering. In short, just as in the uncompounded realm of space, due to the power of time, the container world, what existed before is newly destroyed, and what did not exist before is newly formed, so in the realm of uncontaminated Dharma, sentient beings, due to the power of conceptualization and the three pervasive afflictions (40) of samsara, are first born and ultimately destroyed. That is its meaning. Regarding the way in which nature does not change: The nature of mind, the clear light Dharmadhatu, like the uncompounded realm of space, does not depend on the material cause, nor does it depend on the co-operative condition, so it does not depend on their collection either. Therefore, there is no first birth, final destruction, or intermediate dwelling, so it is never changed by the three conditioned dharmas. That is its meaning. Summarizing the points: The nature of the mind of all sentient beings, the Tathagatagarbha, is like the nature of space, which is not changed by clouds and smoke, etc., and is never changed by purity and impurity, etc. The afflictions of desire, hatred, and ignorance, etc., arising from the non-real grasping conceptualizations, the non-virtuous thoughts, and the pervasive afflictions of karma and birth, which are included in the removable, temporary stains, do not make the Dharmata eternally contaminated by pervasive afflictions, because it is naturally completely pure. That is its meaning. Explaining the differences between these, there is the difference of being unchanging and free from birth and death, and the difference of being changing and in accordance with the three fires. Among them, being free from birth and death

It is. Karma and afflictions, like accumulations of water, etc., cause the mind's nature, the clear light Dharmadhatu, to neither newly arise nor be accomplished as if it were previously non-existent, because it is unconditioned. Similarly, this Dharmata will not be burned or destroyed by the fire of death at the end of time, the fire of disease in hell, or the inexhaustible and extremely fierce, boundless fire of old age, because its nature is unchanging. What is in accordance with the three fires? The fire that destroys the world at the end of time, the fire that burns sentient beings in hell, and the three fires that blaze relying on ordinary firewood—these are the fire of death that transforms life, the fire of disease that transforms elements, and the three fires of old age that transform age. These should be combined in order, and it should be known that they are mutually in accordance and similar in Dharma. Even in the state of impurity and purity, there is no way of change. It shows the true meaning of not being changed by birth, etc. The bodhisattvas of the ten bhumis recognize the qualities. In showing the true meaning, there is a way in which it appears to change even though it does not change. The meaning of this is explained in detail. First, the way it appears is: the noble Bodhisattvas are liberated from the birth of newly formed aggregates, the death of continuous cessation, the disease that produces suffering, and the aging of continuous change, and therefore the Tathagatagarbha Dharmadhatu's nature or reality is directly realized and dwells as it is. Due to the control of karma and afflictions (42), being free from poverty and suffering such as birth, it is completely pure and unchanging. Even so, because of the cause of realizing the Dharmadhatu as it is, wise Bodhisattvas generate great compassion for beings who have not realized it in this way, wishing to be free from all suffering, and abide in it. For the benefit of others, due to the power of aspirations and so on, they intentionally take birth in samsara, die in order to turn away from the clinging to permanence, and abide in samsara relying on disease and old age and so on. In the eyes of others, it is impure and subject to change.

Again, it is the very appearance. That's what it says. In the extensive explanation, it discusses how there is no transformation by suffering, and how it appears to transform from compassion. Among these, the way there is no transformation is: the noble assembly of Bodhisattvas who have attained the mind-made body have completely abandoned the suffering of involuntary death, the suffering of illness, and the suffering of old age. This is because the cause of these sufferings is improper attention, karma and afflictions, and being born in samsara under their influence. But for the Bodhisattva, since those causes do not exist, there is also no result of being transformed by suffering. That's what it says. The way it appears to transform is: because the noble sons of the Buddhas directly see the realm of phenomena as it is, without birth or change, they transcend and are liberated from sufferings such as involuntary birth in samsara (43). However, for sentient beings who have not realized this, because they have the nature of great compassion, they intentionally manifest in samsara, showing various appearances of birth, death, sickness, old age, and so on, and they fully ripen beings to be tamed according to their capacity. That's what it says. In the ten bhumis, there are five ways to identify the qualities of the sons of the Buddhas: first, the quality of generating the mind of enlightenment; the quality of entering into supreme conduct; the quality of attaining non-retrogression; the quality of becoming the last birth; and the distinction of showing the accomplishment of the two benefits. Among these, first is showing the quality of generating the mind of enlightenment: the sons of the Buddhas, the Bodhisattvas who abide on the first bhumi, newly realize this immutable nature of mind, the realm of phenomena, which is naturally pure from transformations such as birth, and although they themselves are liberated from the suffering characterized by birth, old age, sickness, and death, they still see and manifest the birth, etc., of other sentient beings whose eyes of wisdom are blinded by the darkness of ignorance, that is, the ways of aging, sickness, and death, thereby fully ripening beings to be tamed, which is truly amazing and wonderful. Similarly, the realm of conduct that is far removed from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, directly seeing the nature of reality.
