From the vast nature, all arises therein and dissolves therein. As Naropa said: These phenomena of appearance and existence are not separate from the self-aware mind. As the condensed words of Naromaitri say: Appearance self-liberated is the Dharmakaya. When one sees and realizes that very nature, all appearance and existence is the Great Seal. As Maitripa said: The various appearances are the nature of the mind (448), the Great Seal is not established by mere encounter. As Lord Marpa said: This outer appearance is the wheel of illusion, realize it as the unborn Great Seal. As Jetsun said: However the outer appearances may appear, when not realized, they are illusions; attachment to external objects binds us; to those who are realized, they appear as illusions; the appearance of objects arises as a friend of the mind. As Lord Gampopa said: These appearances and sounds, which are the imprints of conceptualization, are grasped as truly existent. And so on, the vajra words of the precious Kagyu lineage are very numerous, but I will not elaborate further for fear of prolixity. Third, eliminating faults and identifying the points of practice, there are three parts: explaining the errors of practice, explaining the faults of biased practice, and identifying faultless practice. First, as explained earlier in the context of shamatha, cultivating a one-pointed mind that is free from the faults of sinking and excitement, and possesses the experience of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality, although it is a special samadhi that generates miraculous powers and clairvoyance, etc., if it is not grasped by bodhicitta, it will be difficult to transform it into a cause for perfect enlightenment. Even if it is grasped, it will not become a special path to enlightenment, because the mind does not turn towards emptiness, so it will not become a real cause of liberation. As Nagarjuna said: Those who do not know emptiness, they do not approach liberation. In the prison of the six realms of existence, those ignorant ones will revolve. Therefore, to know emptiness, it is indispensable to have vipashyana that cuts off the two self-grasps or the root of the mind. Therefore, mere shamatha that is not connected with vipashyana does not become the practice of emptiness and the Great Seal. As it is said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: In the world, there are those who practice samadhi, but they do not destroy the notion of self. And so on, as quoted earlier (450).

Thus, for those who have little learning and have relied on a lama for a short time, even if a slight experience in accordance with meditation arises at first, if they do not know how to protect it, they will unknowingly lose the definitive understanding of insight, and the awareness of concentration will become lax. Various non-meditative experiences will arise, but they will mistake them for meditation, thus creating many errors. Therefore, these should be explained. That is, by practicing meditation in various ways, dullness and drowsiness increase. At first, the subtle and coarse forms in the field of vision become unclear, like a haze. It becomes increasingly unclear, and eventually the eye consciousness dissolves, causing the appearance of form to cease. Similarly, sounds and so on also become unclear in various ways, and eventually cease. Finally, all six consciousnesses that enter the six objects cease, and one becomes like a fainting person, without awareness or memory. For example, when ice forms on a lake, the state of the water becomes clear (451) and bright, but the various characteristics of the objects in the water become unclear. Furthermore, it is slightly clearer than that, and there is only a moment of memory. The appearances of form, sound, etc., have not ceased, but they have become unclear like a haze, causing awareness to become unclear, becoming ignorant, confused, or dull. These are said to belong to the category of the affliction of ignorance, and to the category of its near afflictions. Furthermore, regarding the appearances of the six aggregates, whether clear or unclear, there is no sensation or consciousness, and one does not focus the mind on anything, remaining like a person without memory. This is also similar to the previous one, belonging to the state of emptiness, so it is not suitable as meditation. Because these appear to have a large component of ignorance, they are said to be the cause of animals. As it says in the Precious Garland: "The ignorant mostly (452) become animals." Furthermore, slightly different from these, the mind has some degree of clarity or clear appearance, but it does not have the desired memory and the clarity of awareness. Then, this will not become a virtuous single-pointedness of mind, nor will it turn into non-virtue, so it belongs to the mind of neutrality. Similarly, for all appearances of unclear awareness, neither affirming nor denying, but merely abiding, this must also belong to the category of equanimity of formations, so it is a neutral mind. Neutral actions will later...
