Nirvana is elsewhere, it is not in any place, it is the nature of complete non-thought. Thus it is said. Birwapa said: If you realize the innate state pointed out by the Guru, various memories and awareness will self-vanish into the Dharmadhatu. Thus it is said. Tailopa said: Aggregates, elements and sense bases, all arise from the nature of Mahamudra, and dissolve into it without remainder. Thus it is said. In the condensed words of Naropa Maitri, it is said: (438) Afflictions are great wisdom, like fire in the forest, they are the companion of yogis. Thus it is said. Self-liberation of conceptual thought is great wisdom. Thus it is said. Maitripa said: From the unborn arises sudden thoughts, thoughts themselves are the nature of Dharmadhatu, these two are originally without difference, I have declared that these two have become of one taste. Thus it is said. Lord Marpa said: The movement of the mind, the two of grasping and being grasped, dissolve into the non-elaborate Dharmakaya. Thus it is said. The Great Lord said: The inwardly moving consciousness of the mind, when not realized is ignorance, is the root of all karma and afflictions, when realized it is self-aware wisdom, the white qualities arise completely. Thus it is said. Lord Gampopa said: Hold firmly that the conceptual thought that arises as an appearance is the Dharmakaya. Thus it is said. In accordance with this meaning, there are very many vajra words of the Kagyu precious ones, but I will not elaborate here. At this time, some people think that by looking at conceptual thought, that (439) thought itself is purified, and completely turns into non-thought, this is the meaning of conceptual thought being the Dharmakaya. Some people think that when realized, the nature of conceptual thought is the Dharmakaya, and when not realized, it is not the Dharmakaya, this is not reasonable. The former is because, without understanding that the nature of conceptual thought itself abides in the Dharmakaya, they think that it is necessary to turn into the Dharmakaya from those conceptual thoughts, therefore, it cannot become the proof that conceptual thought is the Dharmakaya. The latter is because, without understanding that the constant nature continuously abides in the Dharmakaya, they think that it must depend on whether a person is realized or not, if so, then its nature Dharmakaya will become changeable. So, how should it be? The former means that the name of conceptual thought being the Dharmakaya is established based on the experience and definite understanding of the combination of the appearance of conceptual thought and its nature abiding in emptiness. The latter means that for a person, realization

Although there is realization, this does not determine whether the nature of conceptual thought (440) is Dharmakaya or not. For example, the presence or absence of eyes does not determine whether the sun has rays. The sun is always radiant, just as the scriptures quoted above state. Furthermore, some people, while holding the view of the inseparability of samsara and nirvana, object to the term that conceptual thought appears as Dharmakaya and delusion appears as wisdom, which is merely wanting to speak. Because your own proof of the inseparability of samsara and nirvana is the same as the proof here. And whatever refutation you have against the former will be turned back on yourself. Your evasive words are that, although at that time only the appearance of samsara is spoken of, in reality it is not samsara, but purely nirvana. If the name of samsara is not used for the appearance of samsara, there is no place to establish the name of samsara. In this way, if samsara and nirvana are inseparable, there is no place to establish the name of samsara. (441) If there is no name of samsara, the union of samsara and nirvana will become purely nirvana. Correspondingly, all classifications of union, such as the union of skillful means and wisdom represented by wisdom, will become separate states such as wisdom existing alone, which will cause many harms. Third, the appearances that appear as mere mind, without relying on the objective conditions that appear as external objects, are merely the appearance of forms appearing in the face of conceptual thought based on past habitual patterns, and are no different from innate conceptual thought. Here, the appearances of form, sound, etc., which are based on common karmic appearances and are commonly known to ordinary people, are identified as innate when they appear to the sense consciousnesses. That is, from the state of equipoise of the previously mentioned innate mind-essence, staring intently at any appearance (442) such as a mountain, house, or vase. It is not merely that the appearance disappears or becomes unclear, and only the mind-essence is experienced as clear emptiness, but rather, as in the case of previously establishing the appearance, the characteristics of whatever form appears are clearly manifest, but the essence or nature of that appearance is emptiness without anything to be identified. In short, whatever appears, the form of that appearance is clear, and it is an unidentifiable emptiness, the two are inseparable.
