Sa! Various kinds of miraculous powers, whether present or absent, and the occurrence of accomplishing or not accomplishing the welfare of beings will happen. In short, summarizing the meaning of the many statements (753) mentioned, the qualities of the grounds and paths spoken of in the Characteristic Vehicle are meaningful, and because its path is different from this path, the signs of the path are also different. Just as there are those with and without ornaments among the Hearers, and those who are famous and not famous among Bodhisattvas, great meditators will also have various kinds of miraculous powers, whether present or absent, in this life due to the magnitude of their previous practice. It is also stated that to accomplish qualities such as miraculous powers, one must strive on the worldly path and the mantra path. These explain the distinctions of the four yogas and how they traverse the grounds and paths, thus perfectly explaining the stages of meditation of the definitive Great Seal. In short, here I say: Those with good fortune, desiring liberation, entering the door of the teachings, abiding in the methods of hearing, thinking, and meditating, are renowned among the wise. However, the method of completely cutting off the root of samsara, the ultimate is to cultivate the definitive meaning. Regarding the meditation on emptiness, such as analytical emptiness, non-affirming negation, and amplification, inert emptiness (754), and so on, are mostly prohibited in the glorious Kalachakra. Some have become prerequisites for the essence of accomplishment teachings. Regarding the method of meditating on the all-encompassing supreme emptiness, the followers of the great Brahmin accomplished ones of the noble land of India, and the Kagyu lineage of Dakpo in this snowy land of Tibet, are praised and extolled by wise, accomplished, and impartial individuals. Just as the meaning of the name Mahamudra is widely known in many sutras, tantras, and Indian treatises, and in this lineage, the extensive and concise stages of meditation pervade everywhere. However, seeing that there are relatively few explanations that definitively conclude its meaning, I have great faith in such commentaries to dispel the doubts of some who have wrong views and hesitations. Even so, in this present age, most scholars are confused about the essential points of practice, some realized ones lack the hearing and thinking of sutras and tantras, and even if both are combined, few possess altruistic intention. I myself am not very learned in the scriptures, and my experience of realization from long-term meditation is not good, but by familiarizing myself with the precious words of the Kagyu lineage, I have done this solely with altruistic intention and wisdom. If there are faults of misunderstanding, wrong views, or hesitation in this, may the holy ones forgive me.

Ah! With immaculate scriptures and the power of reason, refute wrong views and uphold the pure teachings. Otherwise, if the mind is disturbed by the demon of bias, turning good into bad, truth into falsehood, the thought of spreading truth as lies is a matter of shame for those with impartial wisdom. If there are many good qualities in this, may it be praised by other wise and accomplished beings, especially the Dagpo lineage, and may those with discernment engage in study and contemplation. Whatever merit arises from the effort and thought in this way, may it blaze forth like the sun, dispelling the darkness of ignorance of all beings, and may the light of self-awareness and wisdom increase. May I also, in all lifetimes, obtain the auspicious opportunity to practice this supreme path without obstacles, and quickly realize the Dharmakaya, accomplishing all the benefits of limitless beings. Thus, this is written to dispel the wrong views of those with wrong discriminations, and to generate certainty in those who have faith in the practice lineage, motivated by pure intention. Gampopa Mangala by name, began to write this collection of explanations on the definitive Great Seal meditation sequence, which seemed somewhat scarce, at an auspicious time. On the auspicious waxing day of the third month of the Ox year, it was completed in the solitary retreat of the monastery called Naga Kota, in Lhashol of the great seat of glorious Dagla Gampo, the place prophesied by the Victorious Ones. The scribe was the teacher Thupten Palbar, who has faith in this path and holds the treasury of secret mantras. May this also bring auspiciousness to all beings!
