Just as dyeing cloth with colors, although the essence does not change, it transforms into various forms. As stated in the Lankavatara Sutra: The mind is inherently pure and luminous; it appears according to how it is examined, just like white cloth being dyed into various colors. That's how it is. If we thoroughly determine the state and appearance of the mind's objects, we need to understand the classifications of the eight consciousnesses, such as the Alaya consciousness, and the mental factors, but here we will only briefly explain the main points (418). Secondly, regarding the determination of co-emergence. There are three aspects: the nature and meaning of co-emergence, the divisions and individual recognitions, and the meaning of co-emergent union. First, the nature of co-emergence is: being the all-encompassing lord of all that is constant and impermanent, samsara and nirvana, the luminous nature like space. As stated in the *Vajra Two Lines Tantra*: This itself is great wisdom, all abide in the body, the nature of non-duality and duality, the essence of reality and unreality is primary, pervading and abiding in the constant and the changing. And so on, much is said. And that experience itself transcends the realm of speech, thought, knowledge, and expression, and is the domain of individual self-awareness. As stated in the *Praise to the Mother*: Beyond speech, thought, and expression, gone beyond wisdom, unborn and unceasing, the very nature of space, the domain of individual self-aware wisdom, I prostrate to the mother of the Buddhas of the three times. (419) And as Tilopa said: Alas, this is self-aware wisdom, beyond the path of speech, not the domain of the mind. And as stated in the *Vajra Two Lines Tantra*: Not spoken by others, co-emergent. Such is the meaning. The meaning of the term is: Dharma-nature, that is, all phenomena encompassing the constant and impermanent, and their respective Dharma-natures, that is, suchness, without before or after, existing simultaneously from the beginning, therefore it is called co-emergent. As stated in the *Vajra Two Lines Tantra*: That which is born from co-emergence, that is called co-emergent. And as stated in Dombhipa's *Co-emergent Accomplishment*: Because co-emergence has arisen, it is said to be inexpressible co-emergence. And as stated in Indrabhuti's commentary on *Co-emergent Accomplishment*: That which arises simultaneously with what, therefore it is called co-emergent. That so-called co-emergence is it.

That which exists together with moving and non-moving things (420) is called "co-emergent." It is as stated above. Secondly, generally, if co-emergence is classified, there are three types: ground co-emergence, path co-emergence, and fruit co-emergence. Among them, the mind, which is the basis or essence of all samsara and nirvana, whose nature is luminosity, is the ground co-emergence; the view that realizes the nature of all dharmas as emptiness by relying on hearing, thinking, and meditation, is the path co-emergence; by familiarizing oneself with this, the ground co-emergence becomes a co-emergence with two purities, which is called the fruit co-emergence. Furthermore, in the Two Contemplations Tantra and others, it is divided into two types: nature co-emergence and bliss-melting co-emergence. In the context of the Quintessence of Accomplishment, it is further divided into bliss-emptiness co-emergence, making it three types. Therefore, the luminosity of the general meaning of the reality Great Seal is the nature co-emergence; the example luminosity that arises from the melting of conventional bodhicitta is the bliss-melting co-emergence (421); the meaning luminosity of the stage of union is the bliss-emptiness co-emergence. What is relevant here is that Je Dagpo divided mind-itself co-emergent and appearance co-emergent into two, and included all the various conceptual thoughts of mental factors within appearance. Je Gomchung, on top of the former, further divided conceptual thought co-emergent, thus separating conceptual thought and appearance. This seems to be because, for most people, there is a slight difference between the external object appearance that arises in the common karmic appearance and the object appearance in the way conceptual thought appears. Thus, the nature or essence of mind mentioned above, which is luminous and without conceptual thought, free from all elaboration, is the mind-itself co-emergent; its self-power or characteristic, without interruption, appears as various forms of samsara and nirvana, which is the appearance co-emergent; the various conceptual thoughts that radiate from the three poisons (422) and so on are considered to be conceptual thought co-emergent. In reality, the latter two are both appearance co-emergent. Therefore, the reason for using the term co-emergent is as stated above. Such a subject of dharma or dharma, and the dharmata or emptiness of that dharma, are like brown sugar and sweetness, or fire and heat.

Therefore, since it exists together from the beginning, it is called co-emergent. Mind-essence and co-emergent appearance, these two are also said to be inseparable like the sun and its rays, or like sandalwood and its fragrance. As Nagarjuna said: Just as the sweetness of brown sugar and the nature of fire is heat, likewise, the nature of all dharmas is taught to be emptiness. And it is said, conventional truth is emptiness, emptiness alone is conventional truth, because if it does not exist, it will certainly not arise, just like conditioned and impermanent things. Je Gampopa said: (423) Mind-essence co-emergent is the Dharmakaya, appearance co-emergent is the light of the Dharmakaya. Moreover, mind-essence co-emergent is the essence or the way of being of mind-essence. Appearance co-emergent is the various thoughts and concepts that arise in it. This is like the sun and the sun's rays, sandalwood and the fragrance of sandalwood. Je Gomchung said: Mind-essence co-emergent is the Dharmakaya itself, appearance co-emergent is the light of the Dharmakaya, conceptual thought co-emergent is the wave of the Dharmakaya, non-duality co-emergent is the meaning of the Dharmakaya. So he said. Then, for ordinary people, there is also the arising of mind-essence and appearance, so does that also become co-emergent? Lampapa said, whether or not one realizes it as co-emergent exists. Whether one realizes it or not, it as co-emergent has no change or cessation. For example, just as a lamp and sunlight have no bias (424), it appears as darkness to those without eyes. As the great Brahmin said: Even if many lamps are lit in the house, it remains dark for those without eyes. Although the co-emergent pervades everything, it is very far for the ignorant even when it is near. Shavaripa said: Alas, the sun is without clouds, its rays pervade everything, but darkness always appears to those without eyes. Although the co-emergent pervades everything, it itself is very far for the ignorant. Birwapa said: Therefore, all conventional phenomena that appear and exist, their nature is non-existent, merely names, terms, and designations. There is not the slightest difference between name and meaning. Since it is co-emergent from the beginning, there is no need to seek it from elsewhere. That is the meaning. Third, then the mudra
