That is not found in the inside, outside, or in between the two. Furthermore, whatever is the nature of space is the nature of mind; whatever is the nature of mind (410) is the mind of enlightenment. Therefore, mind, the realm of space, and the mind of enlightenment are non-dual and inseparable. Moreover, the Guhyasamaja Tantra says: "Since all phenomena are by nature luminous, they are primordially pure like space." Thus, it seems that those who are not proficient greatly err in thinking that the various clear appearances that arise in the mind are the meaning of naturally luminous, and that luminosity is like the light of the sun, with appearances. The nature of mind is not stained by the stains of elaboration, and it is completely purified from those stains, which is merely given the name of naturally luminous, as proven by the above-cited scriptures. If the nature of mind had luminosity like the appearance of color and light, then the mind would become the nature of color and light (411). If so, it would be unreasonable for the mind to be without nature and naturally pure. Then, what is the self-knowing and self-illuminating awareness, like the self-appearance or self-light of the mind, which transcends the appearance of color and light in the yogi's experience? That is what Naropa's "Summary of Views" says: "These phenomena of appearance and existence are not separate from the self-knowing mind, because they are apparent and clear, like self-knowing experience. Moreover, that very self-knowing, free from elaboration, is apparent and empty, empty and apparent, therefore appearance and emptiness are inseparable, like the moon in water." As it is said, it is merely the arising of the experience of clarity and awareness in the mind. Now, in the language of experience, it seems to be named "awareness," but such awareness is not true awareness because it is with conceptual thought, and it is not the emptiness that possesses all perfections (412), nor is it the universal lord of all. As the Great Commentary on the Kalachakra Tantra says: "Then, what is awareness? It is said: Awareness is the non-conceptual inner awareness, which is the emptiness that possesses all aspects. Moreover, immutability is also awareness, without object, without outflows.
