To establish the true nature of the mind and to explain the two aspects of co-emergent wisdom. First, the three aspects of mind: the essence of mind, the nature of mind, and the characteristics of mind (405). Firstly, in general, although the terms essence, nature, characteristic, or aspect are used to describe the state of mind, in reality, it is no different from the essence of mind itself. As it says in the Manjushri Root Tantra: "The essence of emptiness of all things is not different from what is called nature and aspect; it is the meaning of one's own essence." However, if we differentiate from the perspective of negation, we can divide it into three: essence, nature, and characteristic, and also explain the recognition of each. As Lord Gampopa said: "Among the three aspects of mind—essence, nature, and characteristic—essence is clear and without conceptualization, nature is free from the three stages of arising, abiding, and ceasing, and characteristic appears as samsara and nirvana." Also, "The nature, essence, and characteristic of mind are three. The nature of mind is action, it is naturally pure, it is the unconditioned that pervades all of samsara and nirvana. The essence of mind is action, it is awareness, it is without arising or ceasing. The characteristic of mind (406) is action, it is the appearance of various images of habitual patterns." Furthermore, as Lord Phagmo Drupa said: "Non-duality is the Great Seal, the three aspects are characteristic, essence, and nature. Nature is clear and unobstructed, essence is free from arising, ceasing, and elaboration, and characteristic appears as many forms of samsara and nirvana." Thus, it is said that the essence and nature of mind are consistent in direction. Lord Rangjung Dorje said: "Essence is empty and nature is clear, aspect is unceasing and appears as anything." The aspect mentioned here is consistent with characteristic. Thus, the essence of mind is: from the very beginning, it is free from all phenomena of arising, ceasing, and abiding; it is not tainted by the conceptualization of grasping and being grasped, such as the aggregates, elements, and sense bases; it abides in emptiness as the nature of selflessness and equality, which is the essence of all dharmas. As it says in the Guhyasamaja Tantra: "Free from all phenomena, aggregates, elements, and sense bases, completely abandoning the grasper and the grasped, the selflessness of all dharmas, due to equality, one's own (407) mind is unborn from the beginning, it is the nature of emptiness." Also, as it says in the Bodhicitta Explanation: "The bodhicitta of the Buddhas, the conceptualization of self, aggregates, and consciousness,

unobstructed by all (afflictions). It always abides in the nature of emptiness. Thus, as previously stated, when the nature of the mind is examined and sought in every way, nothing is found to exist as a substance, and the conceptual elaborations of the seeker's mind itself are self-pacified and self-exhausted. This is said to be the ultimate truth and the emptiness of the dharma-nature that has always existed. As it is said in the Two Truths: "The conventional appearance is like this. If analyzed with wisdom, nothing is found. That which is not found is the ultimate truth. It is the dharma-nature that has always existed." Like that. Such an emptiness of the nature of the mind is also the emptiness of the nature of all phenomena encompassed by samsara and nirvana. As Arya Deva said: "One thing is the nature of all things. All things are the nature of one thing." And in the Four Hundred Verses it says: "What is the emptiness of one, that is the emptiness of all." And in the Two Truths it says: "There is no difference in emptiness, not even a little." Thus. Secondly, in the Eight Thousand Verses it says: "The nature of the mind is luminosity." Thus. In the Lankavatara Sutra it says: "The mind is luminous by nature, it is the essence of the Tathagata." And so on, there are very many statements about the nature of the mind being luminous. The meaning of luminosity is that it is pure and unblemished by elaborations such as arising and ceasing, free from the dust of the aggregates and elements and without defilement, unchanging in all aspects like the sky, and inseparable from the nature of the sky. As it is said in the Inquiry of Upali: "This mind is luminous by nature, pure and without stain, without dust, without defilement." Thus. In the Uttaratantra it says: "What is the luminosity of the nature of the mind? It is unchanging like the sky." Thus. In the Ornament of Wisdom Light it says: "Manjushri, enlightenment is luminous by nature because the mind is luminous by nature. Why is it called luminous by nature? Whatever the nature is, it is without any affliction, equal to the sky, having the nature of the sky, completely merged into the sky, like the sky, because it is extremely luminous by nature." Thus. In the Manifestation of Complete Enlightenment it says: "The mind is completely pure by nature,
