Even for some who are of low intelligence and have heavy karmic obscurations, no matter how much they examine, they will not see the essence. For them, they should temporarily strive to accumulate merit and purify obscurations, and cultivate and maintain the clarity of shamatha, and then meditate on vipassanā. Furthermore, some people, because they are intelligent, have a good understanding of the general meaning, and presume that they have generated experience; others, because they have great learning, are skilled in speech, but have no experience; and still others, although they do not know how to express themselves verbally, generate experience at the appropriate time, and thus directly make a decision. Therefore, it is very important to distinguish these situations. If vipassanā has not arisen, then no matter how good the meditation is, it is only a worldly meditation that is common to both non-Buddhists and Buddhists, and it does not even count as a meditation of the Lesser Vehicle, let alone a meditation of the Mahāyāna Madhyamaka and especially the Mahāmudrā. Therefore, it is very important to diligently meditate on vipassanā. So, how should the standard for the arising of vipassanā be determined? A vipassanā that realizes the truth of dharmatā directly and without error only arises in the state of great freedom from elaboration. Here, it refers to the vipassanā that appears in the minds of ordinary beings, just like the moon of one day, which does not have the function of a full moon, but is still called the moon. Therefore, here it refers to all that is included in one's own mind, as mentioned above, and the thoughts and appearances that arise from its power. In short, it is the complete awareness that all phenomena of grasping and being grasped are, in the ultimate sense, separate from arising, ceasing, and abiding, and the deep experience, along with certainty, that their essence or nature is empty. This should be regarded as vipassanā in this context. The scriptures that serve as sources of knowledge have already been spoken of and will be spoken of again. If even that much has not arisen, then the lamas of this very Kagyü lineage seem to regard the experience of obtaining an experience as the vipassanā of a beginner, that is, the emptiness of the nature of one's own mind without clinging, and that this emptiness is self-knowing and self-luminous, the experience of the mind and mind merging together. They believe that by first cultivating just that much, a vipassanā that is free from error will gradually arise. Regarding the standard for the accomplishment of vipassanā, from the perspective of the Sutra tradition, first,

On the basis of achieving pliancy of calm abiding, pliancy arises through meditating on insight, which is the nature of insight. It is said that insight below that is in accordance with insight. But here, there is no such certainty. (397) Just as single-pointedness of mind without having attained pliancy is also considered calm abiding, even the conceptualization and examination on the side of insight without having attained pliancy are included in insight, which mostly comes from the tradition of the pith instructions. Moreover, the divisions of insight are four, such as dharma discrimination, and three, such as arising from signs, so it is appropriate to include the divisions of insight into insight. From the Hearer's Ground, it is said that the mental engagement explained in the chapter on calm abiding is also present in insight. In that case, there is no contradiction in establishing insight from the mental engagement that enters without interruption in the chapter on insight until insight is achieved. Because there, the continuous entry of insight is obtained. However, there are many different systems among the sutras, tantras, and pith instruction practitioners (398) regarding the methods of accomplishing calm abiding and insight, the methods of recognizing their essence, and the methods of combining them, so here the tradition of the pith instructions is mainly used to explain. Sixth, combining this particular insight method with other methods: If combined with the four insights of dharma discrimination, etc., explained in the sutras, commentaries, etc., then here, whatever phenomena of the apprehended and the apprehender, arising from the power of mind, included in conceptualization and appearance, are objects of focus, that is the insight of dharma discrimination. Because it focuses on all knowable phenomena and discriminates them. Those objects of the apprehended and the apprehender also focus on their own lack of inherent existence, which is the insight of thorough discrimination. Because it focuses on the reality of knowable things and discriminates them. (399) Conceptualizing those two things with clinging to signs is the insight of complete conceptualization. Because with individual conceptualizations, all the coarse things of suchness and suchness are conceptualized with clinging to signs. Examining those two things in detail is the insight of complete examination. Because even the subtle and subtle things of suchness and suchness are also examined correctly.
