When examining what differences there are between having and not having, being empty and not empty, being good and bad, etc., no differences can be found. Even if it is understood that there are no differences, when considering the way of non-difference, examine the two, stillness and movement. From one perspective, there is no difference (384), and even if they are different, they appear similar, so there is no difference. If they are one, examine which is one: the beginning, the end, or the middle. If they appear similar, examine in detail how they are similar. Thus, turning away from clinging to and holding the two, stillness and movement, as different continuums, not only the two, stillness and movement, but all the various doors of appearance that arise are transformations of the single nature of mind. When examined, while there is no graspable essence, experience the oneness of taste in what is called one's own awareness, which manifests in any form. For example, just as with water and waves, or the sun and its rays, recognize it as the self-display of the nature of mind. Whether stillness or movement arises, there is no need for negation and affirmation, acceptance and rejection. Thus, be certain that when the mind is still, it is still; when it moves, it is moving. Right there, the mind itself is clear and empty, self-aware, self-illuminating, self-arising, and self-liberating. It is necessary to generate this conviction. So, although the essence of mind is one, what are the causes and conditions for the (385) experiences of stillness and movement appearing separately? It is due to relying on the body, which is the habitual patterns of karma and affliction, or the ripening result of the proximate cause, and thus the radiance of the way the winds flow there appears. And from the interdependent arising of object, faculty, and consciousness, various doors of appearance arise. As the Great Brahmin said, "Here, when the mind is gathered, waves of wind arise, shaking and appearing, very difficult to tame and changing." Maitripa said, "The mind is also just the movement of memory and awareness. Its nature is without essence, but it is the power of wind." It is like that. For example, just as a tree in the ocean has no mind but is moved by the waves, the alaya-consciousness also relies on the body and changes as if moved by the waves of wind. If it does not rely on the body, it is said to be self-knowing, as it is said in the Commentary on the Bodhicitta, "Just as a tree in the ocean, although without mind, is moved, so the alaya-consciousness, relying on (386) the body, is moved. If there is no body, then consciousness is not present, so think again. That is self-knowing." Here, regarding the meaning of the two, stillness and movement, being of one essence, some say that when there is stillness, there is no movement, and when there is movement, there is no stillness.

Some think of abiding. Some, observing movement, think that it awakens from there and goes to abiding. Most think that recognizing the self-nature of transformation in the state of abiding, abiding in the state of movement, is self-standing. But the first view is incorrect, because it only knows that the nature of mind sometimes abides and sometimes moves, and it does not seem to touch the original face where one must abide. The second view is incorrect, because without determining the nature of movement, it seems necessary to stop the movement. The third view is also slightly incorrect, because it only recognizes the self-nature of the state of abiding, without distinguishing movement and movement, and only abides, without clarifying the oneness of the essence (387). So how should it be? In this case, as determined above, it should be exemplified by the example of water and waves, that abiding and movement are inseparable in nature, and are of the same taste in emptiness, but appear different in the changes of experience. As the great Brahmin said: Just as the wind blows on the unmoving, water turns into moving waves. Similarly, the sight of the king shooting an arrow is also, although it is one, it manifests various forms. Like this. In awareness, abiding and movement are the same in essence, but are merely posited as different opposites, etc., which will be explained again later, from which one can understand. Third, as before, from the clear and empty nature of mind, examine oneself by oneself. That is to say, the various thoughts and appearances that arise are merely the manifestations of the power of this very nature of mind. Now, what is the nature or way of being of this thing that is merely called mind (388)? Observe it attentively. First, examine and analyze what cause it arises from, because there is no saying that it arises from this cause, or is caused by this condition, or is made by craftsmen and artisans, etc., so it is determined that it is not born from cause and condition, is rootless and baseless, and is originally unborn. In the middle, observe how it exists, because there is not the slightest bit that can determine shape, color, place, support, and change, etc., so it is determined that it does not exist anywhere, and it cannot be said that its way of being is like this. Finally, observe where it goes, because it has no place to go and no trace, no one can stop it, and the door of manifestation will not close, so it is determined that it will not be destroyed or disappear. Furthermore, if this nature of mind is past, then it should have stopped or been destroyed. If it is future, then it will not arise and appear.
