If now there is a need for an object to be identified (389), but in this way it cannot be examined in any of the three times, so it is free from the extreme of existence. Although it is not established anywhere, it appears as everything and becomes the root of samsara and nirvana, so it is free from the extreme of non-existence. Because it is not established as a thing and a characteristic, it cannot be fully represented by any example. Initially, it does not generate a cause, so it is unborn. Now it is free from all identification, so it is without abiding. Ultimately, it has not gone here, and the door of appearance has not closed, so it is without cessation. It does not arise from a cause, so it is not destroyed by conditions. It does not arise suddenly in time, so it is all-time. Because it is free from the law of arising, ceasing, and abiding, it is without interruption. Because it exists without good or bad in all awakened and unawakened states, it is without increase or decrease. Because it exists in all knowing and unknowing, it is without gain or loss. Because it is unchanging at all times, it is without depletion, etc. For the meaning of unborn, examine and investigate with the wisdom of individual discernment (390), and thus examine the nature or root of the mind itself with an experience that thoroughly explores the foundation. By examining in this way, one experiences that the state of mind is beyond thought and expression. Ultimately, the discriminating mind that examines also becomes self-pacified and self-absorbed, and thus the non-conceptual wisdom is said to arise. As the Great Brahmin said: "Originally pure, like the nature of the sky, looking and looking, the view will cease." And: "If the mind can represent the mind, discrimination and immovability will abide in examination. Just as salt dissolves in water, so the mind dissolves into its own nature." Like this. This way of examining the unborn nature of the mind comes from the Middle Stages of Meditation: "Therefore, if one examines the nature of the mind with wisdom, then, in ultimate truth, the mind (391) is not fixated on internally, nor is it fixated on externally, nor is it fixated on the absence of both. The past mind is not fixated on, nor is the future mind fixated on, nor is the present mind fixated on. When the mind arises, it does not come from anywhere; when it ceases, it does not go anywhere. The mind is ungraspable, unshowable, and not a material thing." It is said. There, in the quoted *Ratnakuta Sutra*, it also says: "Light-protected, the mind cannot be found by searching completely. Whatever cannot be found is not fixated on."

So! That which is not apprehended is neither past, nor future, nor present. That which is neither past, nor future, nor present, that has no intrinsic nature. That which has no intrinsic nature, that has no arising. That which has no arising, that has no cessation. And so on. From the Sutra of the King of Dharma (392): Son of good family, if you desire liberation and release, cut off the limbs of desire and do not think of the mind as two, but think of it as one. The mind that thinks of existence is also empty. The intrinsic nature of the mind is emptiness; there is no going, no abandoning, no obtaining, and its name is Bodhi. Question: If the consciousness of the mind is inconceivable, how can it be said that there is no going, abandoning, or obtaining? Teaching: Enter into the midst of a single-pointed meditation, look inward and examine inward, and the true intrinsic nature has no birth. And so on. From the Sutra of Holding the Holy Dharma Completely: Therefore, the mind is accumulating and nourishing, knowing well that it is not existent and does not abide, do not grasp this as the essence, those are empty by their intrinsic nature. The Dharmas of intrinsic emptiness, in them there is no establishment, all Dharmas are examined, the self (393) nature is thus well proclaimed. Subduing the two extremes, the wise make observations in the middle way, the Dharmas of intrinsic emptiness, that is the path of Bodhi, I have also proclaimed it thus. And so on, both Sutra and Tantra have spoken much. Fifth, the difference between the arising and non-arising of Vipassanā: Thus, when practicing Vipassanā, when examining with the wisdom of individual discrimination, some have a greater portion of Śamatha, so no matter how they examine, they do not touch the point of examination, nor do they penetrate it, but only at the time of examination, the Samadhi of Śamatha arises, and all the points of examination fall upon it, and they mistake the arising of this certainty as seeing the intrinsic nature. Some have a greater experience of emptiness of the base, so all Dharmas arise as the experience of emptiness without intrinsic nature, and they also mistake it as seeing the intrinsic nature. For those, temporarily (394) find a way to eliminate the appearance of the experience of Śamatha and its clinging, separate that awareness from the moisture of the experience, and then practice Vipassanā again, and the meaning will be accomplished.
