is an image. What is the object of vipaśyanā? Only one is taught, namely, the image with conceptualization. What is the object of both? Two are taught, namely, the limit of things and the complete accomplishment of needs. Thus it is said. Also, in the Prajñāpāramitā Upadeśa, it is said: "For that which has become as many as there are and as it is, becoming an image without conceptualization is the object of śamatha. For that which has become as many as there are and as it is, becoming an image with conceptualization is the object of vipaśyanā." Thus it is said. According to the Sutra school, the characteristic of śamatha-vipaśyanā is: having obtained pliancy and having obtained samādhi that constantly arises naturally, one must abide. As it says in the Middle Stages of Meditation: "When the distraction to external objects is pacified, and one delights in the constant and natural arising of the object within, and abiding in the mind itself with great pliancy is called śamatha. When one abides in that śamatha itself, whatever analyzes that alone is vipaśyanā." Thus it is said. Then, what should be said about śamatha and vipaśyanā without having obtained pliancy? For that, the term "concordant with śamatha-vipaśyanā" is taught. As it says in the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra: "Bhagavan, what should be said of the bodhisattva who focuses his mind on the mind, and thinks in the mind, (47) until he has not obtained physical pliancy and mental pliancy? Maitreya, it is not śamatha, but it should be said to be endowed with aspiration and similarity in accordance with śamatha." Thus it is said. "Bhagavan, what should be said of the bodhisattva who, until he has not obtained physical and mental pliancy, thinks in the image of the object of samādhi those dharmas that have been well thought out? Maitreya, it is not vipaśyanā, but it should be said to be endowed with aspiration and similarity in accordance with vipaśyanā." Thus it is said. Similarly, in the Prajñāpāramitā Upadeśa, it is also said: "This is when a bodhisattva dwells alone in a secluded place, and thinks of the meaning as he has thought it, abandoning the expression of the mind, the mind

Having repeatedly contemplated that which appears in that way (48), until physical and mental pliancy is born, it is mental engagement that is concordant with calm abiding. When it is born, it is calm abiding. Like that, abiding in that which has obtained physical and mental pliancy, one should individually examine through special faith in the object of the image of inner samadhi, which is the meaning of how one has thought. Until physical and mental pliancy has not arisen, it is mental engagement that is concordant with insight. When it arises, it is insight. So, through what does the path of calm abiding and insight become completely purified? It is said that when dullness and sleep cease, the path of calm abiding is purified; when excitement and regret cease, the path of insight is purified. As it says in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "Bhagavan, through what is the path of calm abiding completely purified (49)? Maitreya, when dullness and sleep are completely ceased. Bhagavan, through what is the path of insight completely purified? Maitreya, when excitement and regret are completely ceased." Just like it says in the sutra. Fourth, showing the distinctions of calm abiding and insight: dividing calm abiding from the perspective of its essence, there are two types of calm abiding, mundane and supramundane; dividing from the perspective of its function, there are three types, such as calm abiding that abides happily in the present life. But the most famous is dividing the mind into nine types from the perspective of method, as it says in the *Ornament of the Sutras*: "Having fixed the mind on the object, do not let it wander." etc. In the commentary, Vasubandhu says: "These four verses show the method of abiding with the nine ways of abiding of the mind. The nine are: mental placement (50), continuous placement, replacement, close placement, taming, pacifying, thoroughly pacifying, single-pointedness, and equanimity." The *Compendium of Mahayana* says: "What is calm abiding? It is like this: placing the mind within, continuously placing it, replacing it, closely placing it, taming it, pacifying it, thoroughly pacifying it,
