When one apprehends the characteristics with conceptual mental activity that possesses [something], it is complete conceptualization. When one truly conceptualizes, it is complete analysis. So it is said. Furthermore, the Śrāvakabhūmi states: "It focuses on the three doors of vipaśyanā and the sixfold division of the basis. In brief, it is a complete summary of all vipaśyanā." Thus, the term "sixfold division" is also used. It refers to the six ways of seeking that follow the completely searching vipaśyanā, which are explained as seeking meaning, object, characteristic, direction, time, and reasoning. Therefore, it is referred to as "vipaśyanā that seeks meaning," and so on. Fifth, examining the order of śamatha and vipaśyanā: In most of the sūtra-related texts, it is often said that one first cultivates śamatha (54) and then cultivates vipaśyanā. For example, the *Sūtrālaṃkāra* states: The latter arises dependent on the former, Because of being inferior and superior, And because of being coarse and subtle, They abide in that order. This means that the six pāramitās arise one after the other, dependent on the preceding one, and the reason for this is that the preceding one is inferior and the following one is superior, and similarly, it is due to being coarse and subtle. The *Friendly Letter* also states: Without meditation, there is no wisdom. And the *Bodhicaryāvatāra* also states: Knowing that vipaśyanā endowed with perfect śamatha Completely destroys the afflictions, One should first seek śamatha. So it is taught. Similarly, it is taught in the Śrāvakabhūmi, the Stages of Meditation, and the instructions on the Prajñāpāramitā. Based on these, some assert with complete certainty that after cultivating śamatha, when it is accomplished, one must meditate on vipaśyanā in that order (55), and as evidence for this, they say that one cannot attain śamatha without attaining pliancy, and one cannot attain vipaśyanā and its pliancy without attaining these two. This is unreasonable, because it is possible to attain both śamatha and vipaśyanā without attaining pliancy. How is that? Because in the Bodhisattvabhūmi, the *Abhidharmasamuccaya*, and the instructions on the Prajñāpāramitā, it is clearly taught that settling the mind is śamatha, the ninth of the nine mental abidings, and the four, such as discriminating dharmas, are all vipaśyanā. And a beginner cultivates śamatha and vipaśyanā

Because it is very difficult to attain pliancy when attaining the former. Furthermore, according to your view, if it is calm abiding, it must be ultimate calm abiding; if it is insight, it must be ultimate insight. Because you say that if it is calm abiding and insight, one must attain pliancy of each. If you accept that, then the path must also be the ultimate path, because the reason is the same (56). Then, how can it be explained that the commentaries and the pith instructions of the Prajnaparamita say that meditations without attaining pliancy are not calm abiding and insight? That is referring to the level of accomplishing ultimate calm abiding and insight. If it is not like that, as mentioned above, many contradictions and harms to scripture and reasoning will occur. Therefore, the statements that one cultivates insight based on calm abiding are referring to individuals who enter sequentially, because there are those who attain insight even without attaining calm abiding. As it is stated in the Compendium of Topics: 'Some have attained insight but have not attained calm abiding; therefore, they strive for calm abiding based on insight.' And in the Basis of Objects: 'Furthermore, from suffering to the path, one fully understands as it is, but does not attain the first dhyana and so on. Therefore, one abides immediately after sitting, without discriminating phenomena. One engages the higher mind based on higher wisdom (57).' This is stated undeniably. And in all the tantras and the texts of generation and completion stages, the statements that one meditates with signs in the morning session and without signs in the afternoon session are not the way of first accomplishing calm abiding and then cultivating insight after it is accomplished. Moreover, many great accomplished ones do not seek calm abiding separately, but cultivate insight from the very beginning. In particular, this Kagyu lineage has two views: seeking meditation from the view, and seeking the view from meditation, so it is not absolutely certain. Sixth, the method of meditating on the union of calm abiding and insight. The reason why both calm abiding and insight are needed, and the method of uniting the two. The first point is that a mind without calm abiding is like water, moving and impossible to calm. A mind that is not calmed cannot attain the truth as it is (58).
