Furthermore, a higher vision without calm abiding is as unstable as a butter lamp in the wind, and therefore it does not produce a clear light of wisdom, so calm abiding is necessary. As it says in the First Stage of Meditation: 'Because the mind is as agitated as water, there is no abiding without the basis of calm abiding. A mind that is not in equipoise cannot know reality as it is. The Blessed One also said that by being in equipoise, one fully knows reality as it is.' Also, in the Middle Stage of Meditation: 'Higher vision alone, without calm abiding, will cause the yogi's mind to be distracted by objects, and it will not be stable like a butter lamp in the wind. Therefore, the light of wisdom will not arise very clearly, so both should be practiced equally.' Furthermore, no matter how much one meditates on calm abiding without higher vision, it only temporarily suppresses afflictions, but it does not eliminate obscurations, nor does it eradicate the predispositions of afflictions, nor does it liberate one from the faults of samsara such as birth, old age, sickness, and death. As it says in the Middle Stage of Meditation: 'By merely becoming accustomed to calm abiding, yogis do not eliminate obscurations, but only temporarily suppress afflictions. Without the arising of the light of wisdom, predispositions will not be completely eradicated.' Therefore, in the Noble Explanation of the Thought, it is said: 'By concentration, afflictions are suppressed; by wisdom, predispositions are completely destroyed.' Also, there, quoting the words of the Bodhisattva Pitaka: 'Those who have not heard these categories of the Dharma of the Bodhisattva Pitaka, who have not heard the Vinaya of the Noble Ones, and who are content with mere samadhi, fall into manifest pride due to the power of arrogance, and are not completely liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil. They do not completely escape from the cycle of the six realms, nor do they completely escape from the heap of suffering. Considering this, the Tathagata said, 'Obtaining conformity from others will lead to liberation from old age and death.'

Thus it was declared. Thus, the mind not straying from its focus is accomplished by means of Śamatha (tranquility meditation). Having realized that very nature, and not being moved by wrong views, being like a mountain king, it is necessary to accomplish this by means of Vipaśyanā (insight meditation), therefore both Śamatha and Vipaśyanā are necessary. As it is said in the *Moon Lamp Sutra*: 'By the power of Śamatha, it becomes unmoving; Vipaśyanā, however, becomes like a mountain.' Thus it is said. Secondly, if one wonders what kind of method is needed to unite Śamatha and Vipaśyanā, even if one meditates on Vipaśyanā without having attained the ninth stage of mind, there are individual ways of uniting them. However, here, the way to achieve the ultimate union of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā is as follows: When one has attained the Śamatha of the ninth stage of mind, which is the state of equanimity, free from the faults of dullness and agitation, and then diligently cultivates Vipaśyanā, which discriminates the Dharma, then Vipaśyanā also arises spontaneously. Without needing to make effort like in the ninth stage of mind, it becomes effortless. Vipaśyanā also becomes completely pure and refined, and when it merges with the state of mind and enters simultaneously, it becomes the union of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. As it is said in the *Yogācārabhūmi*: 'To what extent do Śamatha and Vipaśyanā become mixed, equally united, and what is called the path of uniting them?' The answer is: 'Among the nine stages of mind, like this, having attained the ninth stage of mind, which is the state of equanimity, and having perfected Samādhi, one diligently cultivates the superior wisdom that discriminates the Dharma. At that time, the path of discriminating the Dharma arises spontaneously and enters without effort. Just like the path of Śamatha, without needing to make effort, Vipaśyanā becomes completely pure and refined, follows Śamatha, and is completely mastered with ease of practice. Therefore, the Śamatha and Vipaśyanā of that are mixed, enter equally, and the path of uniting Śamatha and Vipaśyanā is called thus.' Also, as it is said in the *Bhāvanākrama III*: 'If at any time, because of being free from dullness and agitation, one enters into equanimity and arises spontaneously, at that time, when the mind becomes extremely clear in that very nature, one releases effort and lets it flow naturally.'
