I, from happiness and suffering, through the four meditations of complete detachment, attain equal fortune with Brahma, the Clear Light, the Virtuous Increase (68), and the Great Fruit gods. Thus it is said. In the "Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment," it says: If a yogi achieves tranquility, then even clairvoyance will be achieved. Thus it is said. Vipassanā (insight) temporarily generates happiness for all beings, and because it knows the nature of phenomena, it is said to liberate from the three realms. In the "Compendium," it says: The sons of the Buddhas, the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and the gods, and all the happiness and dharmas of all beings, all of these arise from the supreme Prajnaparamita. Thus it is said. Through wisdom, having fully known the nature of phenomena, one will completely transcend the entirety of the three realms. Thus it is said. The ultimate result of Shamatha-Vipassanā is the attainment of complete enlightenment. In the "Bodhisattva Grounds," it says: The Bodhisattva, having perfected the Paramita of Dhyana (meditation), manifestly awakens to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment (69). He will awaken to perfect enlightenment. He will become perfectly enlightened. Thus it is said. In the "Seven Hundred Prajnaparamita," it says: Manjushri, if one practices the Prajnaparamita, the great Bodhisattva will quickly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Thus it is said. Regarding the general aspects of Shamatha-Vipassanā, Lord Gampopa said: Shamatha and Vipassanā are the gateways to all Dharmas. Thus it is said. Therefore, these two have five aspects: cause, action, obstacle, obscuration, and the path of complete purification. The cause of Shamatha is pure morality; the cause of Vipassanā is the wisdom of hearing and contemplation. The action of Shamatha is to liberate from the bonds of signs; the action of Vipassanā is to liberate from the bonds of bad migrations. The obstacle to Shamatha is attachment to the body and possessions; the obstacle to Vipassanā (70) is not obtaining satisfaction with the definitive meaning of the noble ones. Dwelling in busyness and being content with just a little are obstacles to both. The obscurations are: agitation, regret, and doubt obscure Shamatha; sleep and drowsiness obscure Vipassanā; desire and malice obscure both. Thoroughly eliminate drowsiness and sleep.

This is the correct path of tranquility. Skillfully stopping agitation and regret is the complete path of insight. By skillfully stopping the two obscurations with these two, the result of the pure Dharmakaya is obtained. Thus it is said. These have explained the common nature of tranquility and insight. Secondly, in the order of meditation of tranquility and insight separately, there are three: the order of meditation of tranquility, the order of meditation of insight, and the resolution of doubts about how to practice contemplation. The first of these has three: the practice of achieving tranquility, the nature of the object of focus (71), and the method of achieving tranquility. The first is: It is necessary to abandon the causes of tranquility mentioned earlier, not relying on gathering, and the causes of dullness and agitation, not guarding the sense gates, not controlling food, etc. On an extremely comfortable cushion, the body should abide in the seven dharmas of meditation, subdue the breath, and when it moves inside and outside, it should not be noisy, rough, or agitated, but should move effortlessly and naturally. It is necessary to purify obstacles by enduring suffering, etc. As the "Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment" says: "If the limbs of tranquility are deficient, even if one strives to meditate diligently, even after thousands of years, one will not achieve samadhi." Also, as the "First Steps in Meditation" says: "Tranquility is not greedy for gain and other desirable objects, abiding well in discipline, enduring suffering, etc., having such conduct, if one practices diligently, one will quickly achieve it." Thus it is. The second has four: the nature of the general object of focus (72), the way in which one focuses on what, the explanation of the initial object of focus, and the way to maintain the object of focus with mindfulness and awareness. The first of these has four: pervasive object of focus, antidote object of focus, skillful object of focus, and affliction antidote object of focus. The first is: It is a distinction in the way of focusing on the latter three objects of focus. If this is divided, there are four types. Focusing on an image with conceptualization is mainly the object of focus of insight, but here it refers to the sign of yoga with signs. Focusing on an image without conceptualization means focusing the mind on the object of focus without analytical thought. The so-called image refers to the object of focus, which is not the actual self-characteristic existence, but its appearance in the mind.
