Regarding the explanation of observation: Focusing on the ultimate nature of things means being certain that, with regard to suchness, it exists only in this state and will not exist in any other state; and with regard to such quantity, being certain that it is limited to this extent and there is nothing else, thereby gaining certainty of mind. This is the former observation. Focusing on the complete accomplishment of necessity means that through repeated practice of these focuses, one is liberated from the negative states of body and mind, thereby accomplishing the goal. The second is: a special focus that prevents afflictions such as desire from being used as before and will not arise again in the future. This has five aspects. Focusing on impurity means focusing on the internal impurities such as hair, body hair, feces, urine, etc., and the external impurities such as swelling and decay. Focusing on loving-kindness means generating the mind of wishing to equally benefit and bring happiness to all enemies, friends, and neutral parties. Focusing on dependent origination means contemplating the twelve links of dependent origination, such as ignorance, and the dependent origination of karma and its results. Focusing on the differentiation of elements means separately focusing on the parts of the six elements of earth, water, fire, wind, space, and consciousness (74). Focusing on breathing in and out means preventing the mind from being distracted to other things by counting and observing the breath going in and out. The third is: a special focus that can prevent the self of the person other than the aggregates, elements, etc. This also has five aspects. Being skilled in aggregates means knowing that there is no self or what belongs to self different from the five aggregates such as form. Being skilled in elements means knowing the causes and conditions of the eighteen elements such as the eye, each arising from its own seed. Being skilled in sources means knowing the six internal sources, the dominant cause of the six sense consciousnesses, the six external sources, the cause of the object, and the immediately ceased mind as the immediately preceding cause. Being skilled in dependent origination means knowing that all twelve links of dependent origination are impermanent (75), suffering, and without self. Being skilled in what is and is not possible means that the arising of a satisfactory result from virtuous actions is possible, and the arising of an unsatisfactory result from non-virtuous actions is not possible.

It is knowledge, which is similar to being skilled in dependent origination. Fourth, it is the object that serves as the antidote to all afflictions, and this has two aspects: The object of quiescence and coarseness is to focus on the lower and lower realms as being coarser, and the higher and higher realms as being more quiescent, between the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm. The object of the four truths is to focus on the sixteen aspects such as impermanence, each of the four truths of suffering, origin, cessation, and path. It is said that the former weakens the seeds of affliction, while the latter completely eradicates them from the root. Although these objects are common objects of quiescence and insight, they are mostly explained in the context of quiescence (76) due to their primary importance. To make them the object of quiescence, one must first focus on those objects and then, when their aspects appear, hold the mind without any other investigation, through any kind of mental determination. Second, in terms of taming the afflictions, what kind of person focuses on what kind of object? As quoted from the Sutra Requested by Nagashri: "If a monk yogi's yoga practice is solely for taming desire, then he should focus his mind on the unattractive. If it is for taming hatred, then it is on love. If it is for taming ignorance, then it is on the dependent arising of this very condition. If it is for taming pride, then he should focus his mind on the differentiation of elements." And, "If it is solely for abandoning conceptualization, then he should focus his mind on the mindfulness of inhaling and exhaling (77). Thus, he should focus his mind on the object that is in accordance with it." So on and so forth. In terms of the object of expertise, what kind of person focuses on what kind of object? In the same sutra: "If a monk yogi's yoga practice is completely ignorant of the self-nature of all phenomena, or completely ignorant of the reality of self, sentient beings, life, beings, nurturers, and persons, then he should focus his mind on expertise in the aggregates. If he is completely ignorant of causes, then he should focus on expertise in the elements. If he is completely ignorant of conditions,
