Like an untamed elephant, if it is not tied to a stable object of focus like a pillar with mindfulness like a rope, it must be tamed with awareness like an iron hook, gradually gaining freedom. Here, the meaning of such a metaphor is explained. As stated in the Madhyamakahṛdayakārikā: "The mind, like a wild elephant, is difficult to tame, tie it to a stable pillar of focus, bind it tightly with the rope of mindfulness, gradually tame it with the iron hook of wisdom." That is the meaning. Moreover, if one is too diligent and exerts too much effort, agitation will arise; if one is too relaxed, the mind will become depressed and sink. Therefore, one must seek faultless samadhi in the balance between tightness and looseness, and guard it. Candra Gomin said: "If diligence is cultivated, agitation will arise, if that is abandoned, then depression will arise, it is difficult to find the middle path between these two, so why disturb my mind?" Also, as stated in the Confession Praise: "If one enters with diligence, agitation will arise, if one relaxes it, then depression will arise, it is difficult to achieve practice in the middle way between these two, what is the use of disturbing one's own mind?" Third, regarding the method of practicing calm abiding, there are four methods: the method of cultivating the mind's abiding with eight applications, the method of achieving the stages of the nine mental abidings, the method of achieving these minds with the six powers, and how these (page 84) become the four types of attention. The first is, as stated in the Madhyāntavibhāga: "In that abiding, the state of being serviceable, all meanings are accomplished, abandoning the five faults, cultivating the eight applications, arising from relying on the cause. Laziness and the instructions, forgetfulness, sinking, and agitation, non-application and application, these are considered the five faults. Abiding and abiding in that, cause and the nature of the result are that, not forgetting the object of focus, and knowing sinking and agitation, abandoning those and applying, when peaceful, entering as it is." Here it is said that the recognition of the five faults and the eight applications has already been explained earlier. So, how does one abandon these and cultivate meditation? First, when one is not interested in practicing samadhi and instead likes the three types of laziness that are contrary to it, seeing the qualities of samadhi, one generates the three types of faith that attract the mind. For samadhi, the mind is extremely focused and there is a strong desire to strive for it.

And to be firm. Seeing the faults of laziness (85) and the virtues of samadhi, strive for its acceptance and rejection, that is, rely on great diligence. When fatigue arises in body and mind, accept that suffering, and gradually develop great suppleness in body and mind. When the mind is placed on the object of focus, recite the instructions, and when the mind wanders elsewhere, continuously generate the power of mindfulness, and again gather the mind and place it on the previous object of focus. At that time, if the fault of sinking or excitement arises, or if there is doubt that it will arise, then observe with awareness and recognize it. When distracted by sinking or excitement and not focusing on the object of focus, or not striving, cultivate effort or diligence to eliminate sinking and excitement through methods such as tightening and loosening, and meditate. When the glory of sinking and excitement flourishes, and the mind becomes agitated due to excessive activity, rest in equanimity without focusing on anything, and skillfully maintain (86) that samadhi. This method of achieving tranquility is well-known in the treatises of the Stages of Meditation and in most instructions. Secondly, the meaning of what is said in the Ornament of the Sutras, "The mind is fixed on the object of focus, and its continuity is not allowed to wander," is that there are nine minds, of which the first is placing the mind: the mind scatters everywhere towards external appearances, etc., and does not abide at all, and that itself is truly gathered and directed inwards towards the object of focus, that is, "the mind is fixed on the object of focus." The second is continuous placement: the mind that is first placed on the object of focus, not letting it wander elsewhere, but continuing its continuity and placing it, that is, "its continuity is not allowed to wander." The third is repeated placement: if it wanders elsewhere due to forgetfulness, recognizing it, again placing it on that object of focus, that is, "quickly knowing the distraction, again place it on that." (87) The fourth is close placement: the object of the mind's scattering is vast, gathering it from the many, making it subtle, and gradually placing it from above, that is, "the wise gather the mind inwards from above." The fifth is taming: thinking about the virtues of samadhi, being diligent in it, thereby taming the mind.
