By focusing on one point, two types of mind can be accomplished. By striving to abandon even the slightest distractions and near afflictions, and preventing dullness and agitation from interrupting, continuous samadhi is achieved. Through the power of familiarity, the mind of equipoise is accomplished. Due to the power of having become familiar and accustomed to the previous, one enters samadhi effortlessly and naturally. Fourth, regarding the four applications of mind to the above nine stages of mind-abiding, they are: forceful application, intermittent application, uninterrupted application, and spontaneous application. In the case of the first two minds, great effort is required, hence it is forceful application. Then, in the case of the five minds, because they are interrupted by dullness, agitation, etc., and cannot be maintained for a long time, it is intermittent application. In the case of the eighth mind, it cannot be interrupted by dullness, agitation, etc., and can be maintained for a long time, hence it is uninterrupted application. In the case of the ninth mind, continuous strong effort is not required, and samadhi arises naturally, hence there is spontaneous application. As stated in the Śrāvakabhūmi: 'In these nine abidings of the mind, it should be known that there are four kinds of attention: forceful application, intermittent application, uninterrupted application, and spontaneous application. For fixing and rightly fixing, there is the attention of forceful application. For gathering and fixing, closely fixing, taming, pacifying, and closely pacifying, there is the attention of intermittent application. For making a single stream, there is the attention of uninterrupted application. For making samadhi, there is the attention of effortless application.' Here, the names of the nine abidings of the mind are slightly different from the previous ones, but the essence is the same. If someone thinks that the first two minds also have intermittent application, and the middle five also require forceful application, how is this explanation to be understood? Although that is the case, the first two minds do not easily enter samadhi (92), and in most cases are

The term for being forced to enter, and the five in between mostly enter into samadhi, so it seems that the term of cutting off and entering is spoken. Even in practicing such a state of calm abiding, if it is mixed with bad distractions and practiced to be extremely stable, it will be difficult to achieve even after thousands of years. Conversely, if one relies on the previously mentioned causes and conditions, and cultivates continuous effort without being interrupted by bad distractions, it is said that samadhi will be achieved before long. As the "Lamp for the Path" says: "If the limbs of calm abiding are deficient, even if one strives and meditates diligently, even after thousands of years, samadhi will not be achieved." And as the "Compendium of the Perfection of Wisdom" says: "With uninterrupted yoga, strive to cultivate meditation. Again and again, and when weary, like rubbing without advancing or changing. The way of yoga is also like that, if one has not obtained a special achievement, do not give up." As (93) says. These have finished explaining the stages of calm abiding meditation. Second, regarding the stages of insight meditation, there are two: the general way of practicing insight, and the way of generating the view of insight. The first is: generally, there are three types of insight: worldly insight, supramundane but inferior insight, and Mahayana insight. The former is insight that focuses on the aspects of quiescence and grossness, the middle one focuses on the four truths and mainly negates the self of the person, and the latter is the insight to be cultivated here. In this regard, the "Commentary" speaks of three divisions of insight: that which arises from signs is the wisdom of insight's application, which engages with the object of focus, the sign. That which arises from complete seeking is the wisdom that realizes what has not been realized in the state of view (94). That which arises from individual discernment is explained as the wisdom that liberates from the dharmas that have been well realized. The latter refers to meditating after finding the view of definitive meaning. Furthermore, the "Commentary" and the "Compendium" speak of four insights: dharma discrimination is the wisdom that focuses on as many dharmas as there are through the means of objects of practice and purification, etc. Extreme discrimination is similarly, regarding how all
