Therefore, in order to see the qualities, one tames the mind with samadhi. Thus it is said. Sixth, pacifying, is to pacify the mind that dislikes samadhi by contemplating the faults of distraction, that is, in order to see the faults of distraction, one pacifies the mind that dislikes it. Thus it is said. Seventh, making extremely peaceful, is that if afflictions such as attachment, discomfort, and drowsiness arise as faults to samadhi, one makes them subside nearby by their respective methods, that is, when attachment, discomfort, etc., arise, one makes them subside in that way. Thus it is said. Eighth (88), making it one-pointed, is that samadhi itself, with manifest effort, is cultivated so that later one obtains effortless and continuous arising, that is, then the one who strives with discipline, with manifest effort on the mind, obtains spontaneous arising. Thus it is said. Ninth, placing in equipoise, is that after cultivating the eighth mind, one enters naturally and effortlessly and attains freedom, that is, after cultivating it, one does not make effort. Thus it is said. The third is, as stated in the *Śrāvakabhūmi*, to accomplish *śamatha* through the door of the six powers, namely, the power of hearing, the power of thinking, the power of mindfulness, the power of vigilance, the power of diligence, and the power of familiarity. The power of hearing accomplishes the mind of placing, that is, just by hearing from others how to place the mind on the object, one can also place the mind on the object, and so on. The power of thinking accomplishes the mind of placing continuously, that is, first examining the object (89), and then repeatedly thinking and guarding it, one can continuously and slightly place the mind. The power of mindfulness accomplishes the two minds of taking back and placing, and placing nearby, that is, when distracted from the object, one remembers the previous object with mindfulness and gathers it inward, and from the beginning, the force of developing the power of mindfulness prevents one from being distracted from the object. The power of vigilance accomplishes both the taming and the pacifying minds, that is, when conceptual thoughts and near afflictions arise, and the mind is distracted by them, one recognizes them with vigilance and sees their faults, thereby not allowing the mind to be distracted by them. The power of diligence accomplishes making extremely peaceful and
