Grasping is explained as the two, self and what belongs to self, and the absence of inherent existence is explained as the two, selflessness. Chandrakirti, in his commentary on the Four Hundred Verses, says: "That which is called 'self' is the inherent nature of things that does not depend on others. The absence of that is selflessness. It is understood as two by the distinction of phenomena and persons, namely the selflessness of phenomena and the selflessness of persons." Here, phenomena are said to be the grasping of their own characteristics, which are encompassed by the grasper and the grasped. Persons are said to be the grasping of the continuum of the aggregates of appropriation, which are accompanied by consciousness. As it says in the Miscellaneous Sutra: "Grasping at characteristics is called phenomena, and (100) grasping at the continuum is called persons." That person grasps at permanence and singularity, and clings to and grasps at the thought, "I am" and "it is mine," this grasping is the self of the person. For the phenomena of its aggregates, etc., clinging to and grasping at other entities with their own characteristics, this grasping is the self of phenomena. These two selves generate all faults such as karma and afflictions. As Dharmakirti says: "If there is a self, then one knows others. From the division of self and others, grasping and hatred arise. From these and their connections, all faults will arise." And as it says in the Precious Garland: "As long as there is grasping at the aggregates, so long as there is clinging to 'I'. If there is clinging to 'I', then there is karma. From karma, there is birth." Therefore, in order to abandon samsara, which is accomplished by grasping at self, it is important to meditate on the meaning of selflessness. As Dharmakirti says: "Without refuting this object, one cannot abandon it." And as it says in the Four Hundred Verses: "If one sees the absence of self in objects, then the seed of existence will cease. (101)" And as it says in the Entering the Middle Way: "All the faults of afflictions arise from the view of the collection of destructible things, having seen this with intelligence, and having realized that the self is the object of this, the yogi prevents the self." Like that. Furthermore, by meditating on the meaning of selflessness, the view of the collection of destructible things, which grasps at self and what belongs to self, is reversed. By reversing that, the birth of the continuum of aggregates, which is caused by the conditions of craving, grasping, and existence, etc., is exhausted, and liberation is attained. As it says in the Root Verses: "For the sake of pacifying self and what belongs to self, the clinging to 'I' and the clinging to 'mine' will be absent." And: "When the thought of self and what belongs to self is exhausted in both internal and external things, then the near taking
