Form is the only one, taste and desire are food, like dogs with attachment, these are the three kinds of discrimination. As it is said. Then, how does it happen that what is grasped and what grasps appear in various ways? Because of impure habitual tendencies, wrong knowledge appears as an external object. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: "The mind disturbed by habitual tendencies, appears as meaning, but it is not real, it is only the nature of mind, seeing the meaning of external objects is inverted." As it is said. Mere appearance does not establish truth, like the arrangement of illusions. As it says in the King of Samadhi Sutra: "Magicians transform forms, making various things like horses, elephants, and chariots. But there is nothing that appears in them. All dharmas should be known in the same way." As it is said. To meditate in brief, as it says in the First Stage of Meditation: "The selflessness of dharmas should also be meditated on in this way. What is called dharma is, in brief, the five aggregates, the twelve sources, and the eighteen realms. Among them, the aggregates, sources, and realms, whatever is form, in the ultimate sense, is not different from the appearance of mind. They are broken down into atoms, and even the atoms are examined separately for their nature of parts, then because they are without self-nature, they cannot be grasped. Therefore, from beginningless time, because of the power of clinging to forms and other things that are not true, like the appearance of forms and other things seen in a dream, to children, mind itself appears as forms and other things cut off externally. But in the ultimate sense, these forms and other things are not different from the appearance of mind. It should be examined in this way." As it is said. The third is that negating the two selves in this way is to negate clinging to and grasping at what appears as the object of grasping and the grasper as its own characteristic. But in the ultimate sense, it is not right to generate an emptiness-grasping and a non-grasping towards the object of grasping and the grasper. As it says in the Root Wisdom: "The Buddhas have said that emptiness is to remove all views. Those who hold the view of emptiness, are said to be incurable." And as it says in the Jewel Heap: "Light Protector, it is easy to abide in the view of self as Mount Meru. But it is not so to hold emptiness with pride."

Why is that? Because everything that arises from seeing emptiness (109) is emptiness itself. If one only sees emptiness, that cannot be remedied. As it says in the Commentary on the Bodhicitta, 'Unborn and emptiness, and selflessness are called emptiness. Whoever meditates on a lower self, that one does not meditate on that.' As Jowo Je said, 'Through the power of habituation to skillful means, whoever cultivates wisdom well, that one quickly attains enlightenment, not by meditating on selflessness alone.' Like that. So, what is it like? All phenomena of grasping and being grasped appear merely as interdependent arising, therefore they are neither purely empty nor non-existent. If one examines and analyzes, since there is no establishment of their own nature or essence, they are not something to be identified and truly existent. As it says in the Root Wisdom, 'If there is something that is not interdependent arising, then there is no such thing as a phenomenon. Therefore, if there is no emptiness, then there is no such thing as a phenomenon.' And, one should not say empty, (110) nor should one say not empty, one should not say both or neither, one should speak for the sake of designation. And, saying 'exists' is grasping at permanence, saying 'does not exist' is seeing as annihilation. Therefore, the wise should not abide in existence and non-existence. As it says in the Self-Commentary on the Two Truths, 'Therefore, it is not empty, it is not not empty, it is not existent, it is not non-existent, it is not unborn, it is not born. Thus spoke the Blessed One.' Therefore, since the minds of beings are accustomed to engaging in various fabrications, they are frightened because there is no place for conceptual grasping or targets, etc., for the mind to engage. Because they like places of conceptual grasping, etc., they grasp at existence and non-existence, emptiness and non-emptiness, etc., and this causes the world to be destroyed. As it says in the Precious Garland, 'Beings who are frightened by this placeless Dharma, clearly delight in places, and because they grasp at existence and non-existence, the unwise will be destroyed.' So, even though all objects of grasping and being grasped (111) are not established as either real or unreal, etc., should they be regarded as self-knowing and self-illuminating of Mind Only? That also only occurs in some experiential appearances generated by conditions, but in reality, it is not established. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra, 'External objects exist or not.'
