cease, therefore birth ceases. Karma and afflictions cease and are liberated. So it is said. Secondly, the negation of the self of a person and the negation of the self of phenomena, of the two. The first is, according to the Madhyamaka doctrine, in the Ratnavali it says: "The statement 'there is a self' (102) and 'there is what belongs to the self' is a reversal in ultimate truth." Thus, the doctrine of no-self, which explains the absence of a self of a person, is that if there were a self, it would be reasonable for it to arise from either itself, others, both, or the three times, but since it does not arise from these, there is no self. In that same text, it says: "It is not obtained from itself, others, or both, nor in the three times, therefore the clinging to self will be exhausted." Furthermore, if there were a self of a person, it would have to be either identical to or different from its aggregates, but this is not reasonable. In the Root Wisdom, it says: "If, apart from the aggregates, you say there is a self, then the aggregates themselves are the self, and your self will be non-existent." And it says: "If the aggregates are the self, then they will be subject to birth and destruction." Thus, it refutes identity with the aggregates. If you assert that the self is subject to birth and destruction, then the recollection of birth is unreasonable, and actions done will be fruitless, and those not done will be encountered, with this reasoning (103) it is refuted. The refutation of the self and the aggregates being different is also in that same text: "If it is other than the aggregates, then it will not have the characteristics of the aggregates." And it says: "The self is not reasonably other than the aggregates, if it is other, then there is no taking, if there is grasping, then there is no grasping." And in the Entering the Middle Way it says: "Therefore, there is no self other than the aggregates, because there is no grasping of it apart from the aggregates." Thus. In this way, the force of negating the self of a person also negates the eye, nose, etc., which belong to it. In the Root Wisdom, it says: "If the self is non-existent, how can there be what belongs to the self?" And in the Entering the Middle Way it says: "Because the agent is non-existent, there is no action, therefore the self and what belongs to the self are non-existent. Therefore, by contemplating the emptiness of the self and what belongs to the self, that yogi will attain liberation." The meditation on the absence of a self of a person, in brief, in the First Stage of Meditation it says: "A person (104) is not seen apart from the aggregates, elements, and sense bases. The self is also not the nature of the aggregates, etc., because those aggregates, etc., are impermanent and of multiple nature."

Because of this, others consider the person (pudgala) to be permanent and of a single essence. If the person cannot be spoken of as "that one" or "another," then the person cannot be real, because there is no other form of reality. Therefore, one should contemplate that the worldly "I" and "mine" are merely illusions. Thus it is said. Secondly, the aggregates, elements, and sense-fields, etc., which are the basis for designating a person, are phenomena (dharmas), and the manner of refuting their inherent existence is as follows: The Root Wisdom says: "Not from self, not from other, not from both, not without cause. Nowhere, at any time, is there any arising of entities." Here, arising from the four extremes is generally negated. If the cause (105) and effect are the same, then the producer and the produced become one. This negates arising from self. If the cause and effect are different, then the cause and non-cause become the same. This negates arising from other through reasoning. The Entering (into the Middle Way) also negates the other two, because arising from self, from other, or from both, and existence without relying on a cause are impossible, therefore things are devoid of inherent existence. All phenomena such as the aggregates depend on causes and conditions, therefore they cannot be inherently existent. As the Root Wisdom says: "That which arises from causes and conditions becomes something made, and how can something made be inherent existence?" Thus it is said. If one investigates and analyzes, then all that is apprehended and the apprehender are not established as real, because if they were established, they would have to be established as either one or many, but in fact neither of these is established. As Dharmakirti said: "If one analyzes things, then they are not real in that analysis, because they do not have the nature of one or many." Thus it is said. That it is not established as one is stated in the Commentary on the Awakening Mind: "Form, atoms, sense, and consciousness are not produced by the senses, for they transcend the senses. If the aggregate produces them, then that collection is also not desired. Even atoms, which are divided by the division of directions, are seen to have divisions. How can atoms be reasonable where parts are examined?" Thus it is said. That it is not established as many is also stated in the same text: "The meaning of external objects is a single aspect, but different consciousnesses arise. Whatever is a pleasing form, that is neither different nor the same. Women
