Or the mind of effort. Equanimity of subduing is, from the Hearer Grounds: "What is equanimity? For the object of focus in the aspects of calm abiding and insight, the mind is completely without afflictions, the equality of mind, and subduing, naturally entering, the mind is comfortable, and after the mind is workable, without effort, (36) whatever is the spontaneous action." It is said. When calm abiding and insight are balanced, free from sinking and excitement, then subdue it, relax the excessive effort, and thereby be skilled in making the mind workable. Likewise, in that same text, it says: "What is the sign of equanimity? With what object does the mind become equanimous, and for that object, one does not make excessive effort." And "What is the time of equanimity? When there is no sinking or excitement in the aspects of calm abiding and insight, etc." Secondly, it is divided into two: abandoning the cause of arising sinking and excitement, and the way to stop sinking and excitement. First, most of the obstacles to samadhi belong to the two aspects of sinking and excitement. The cause of arising sinking and excitement is said to arise from impure actions of the three doors, as it says in the Compendium of Matters: "What is the sign of sinking? Not guarding the sense faculties, not moderating food (37), not being diligent in the yoga of not sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night, not abiding in mindfulness, engaging in foolish conduct, sleeping too much, not knowing the method, having laziness in intention, diligence, mind, and observation, habituating to calm abiding, not completely purifying calm abiding and focusing on one aspect of calm abiding, the mind is like darkness, not liking to focus on the object." And "What is the sign of excitement? Like before, the four of not guarding the sense faculties, etc., engaging in desire, having the aspect of not being subdued, the mind is not weary, not knowing the method, and like before, having excessive clinging in intention, etc., not habituating to diligence, not purifying clinging (38) and meditating on one aspect of it, and thinking of relatives, etc., excitement.

Any Dharma that is in accordance with this will cause the mind to be distracted. So it is said. Among them, the signs of sinking and excitement refer to the causes of sinking and excitement. Being lazy also applies to diligence, mind, and wisdom. Being accustomed to tranquility means being accustomed to that kind of experiential appearance. Being too attached means that the mind is too attached to the object of joy, that is, having the corresponding desire, diligence, etc. In this way, one should strive to eliminate those causes of sinking and excitement. Second, if the above-mentioned coarse sinking arises, in order to prevent it, one should pay attention to the sign of light and the merits of the Buddha, observe with the wisdom of individual discrimination, expand the object of focus, cultivate joy, and increase mental strength, etc. As the first stage of the "Stages of Meditation" (39) says: If at any time one is oppressed by lethargy and sleep, and the holding of the object is not clear, and the mind falls into sinking, then cultivate the thought of light, or pay attention to the qualities of the most joyful things, such as the Buddha, etc., to eliminate sinking and firmly grasp that object. Also, as it says in the "Compendium of Perfections": By the power of the strength of the effort of superior insight, if it becomes depressed, one should also increase mental strength. Also, as it says in the "Essence of Madhyamaka": When depressed, one should cultivate a vast object, making it wide. So it is said. The sign of light is, as it says in the "Hearer's Ground": From the light of a lamp flame, or from the light of a pile of fire, or from the sun's disc, take a sign of light. Thus, the mind focuses on all those lights that shine and become bright. In this practice, one should also pay attention to the sign of light, increase mental strength with objects that are intermittent with the mind, such as the six recollections, think about the faults of lethargy and sleep, which are the causes of sinking, and abandon them, walk around, look at the four directions and the moon and stars, wash the face with clean water, etc. This is the behavior described by the Hearers. If coarse excitement arises, in order to prevent it, one should cultivate impermanence, etc., and generate aversion, think about the faults of excitement and abandon them, abide in tranquility and calm the mind, etc. As the first stage of the "Stages of Meditation" says: Whenever previous excitement and playfulness
