Clinging to the mind with intention belongs to the category of ignorance, and it is a factor that hinders the mind from abiding. As it is said, regardless of whether things are reasonable or not, repeatedly clinging to the mind with rational or irrational thoughts prevents the mind from settling down. Drowsiness is: What is drowsiness? It belongs to the category of ignorance, (26) making the mind dull, and it is an accomplice to all afflictions and near afflictions. Thus it is said. In the commentary on the Abhidharmakosha, what is drowsiness? It is heaviness of body and heaviness of mind, that is, unsuitability of body and unsuitability of mind. Thus it is said. This refers to the fact that due to ignorance, both body and mind become heavy and unusable. Here, although agitation is not mentioned separately, it is because agitation and drowsiness have similarities. But in the Middle Stages of Meditation, it says: When the mind does not clearly see the object, like a blind person, or like a person entering darkness, or like closing the eyes, then it should be known that it has become agitated. Thus it is said. This refers to a state where the body and mind are tired, causing the clarity of the object to decrease, which is slightly different from drowsiness. Sleep is: In the same scripture, what is sleep? Relying on the cause of sleep, for good and non-(27)good, and neutral, and timely and untimely, and reasonable and unreasonable things, gathering the mind, it belongs to the category of ignorance, and it is the root of losing the object. Thus it is said. This refers to relying on the cause of sleep, gathering the cognition of any object, and causing the loss of the object. Doubt is: In the same scripture, what is doubt? It is having dualistic thoughts about the truth, and it is the root of preventing entry into the path of virtue. Thus it is said. This refers to having doubts about the two truths, such as conventional truth, or the four truths, such as suffering. Here it refers to having doubts about whether the meaning to be proven is true, whether it can be achieved, etc., thus being unwilling to enter. Craving for desire is: For any desirable object, having a craving to obtain it, thus causing the mind to indulge in it. Harmful intent is: With anger or jealousy towards others, (28) the mind that attempts to harm them. Other factors that hinder shamatha and vipassana, in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, it says:

Venerable One, when a Bodhisattva engages in tranquility and insight, in how many ways can he fully know the distractions of the mind? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, in five ways, namely: distraction of attention, external distraction, internal distraction, sign distraction, and evil destination distraction. Thus, five distractions are taught. Their identification is also there. Maitreya, if a Bodhisattva abandons the attention associated with the Great Vehicle and completely falls into the attention associated with Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, that is the distraction of attention. If the mind scatters outward to the five desirable qualities of external objects, noise, signs, discriminations, and near afflictions, that is external distraction. If one is overcome by dullness and sleep, or tastes the flavor of absorption, or is defiled by any near affliction of absorption, that is internal distraction. If, relying on external signs, one attends to the signs of the inner meditative state, that is sign distraction. If, with respect to the feeling arising from inner attention, one conceives of the aggregates of evil destination as "I" and generates pride, that is evil destination distraction. Thus it is said. Furthermore, in the "Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes" it says: Laziness and instructions, Forgetfulness, sinking and agitation, Non-application and application, These are considered as five faults. That is to say, laziness, forgetfulness, sinking, agitation, non-application, and (30) application of mind, these five faults, or six if sinking and agitation are counted separately, are said to be obstacles to tranquility, and it is the same for insight. Among them, laziness refers to, whether it is reproach, negligence, or idleness, becoming discouraged and losing the diligence to cultivate concentration. Forgetfulness refers to, forgetting the object to be cultivated and scattering the mind elsewhere. Sinking and agitation refer to, as mentioned above. Non-application refers to, abandoning sinking and agitation.
