How wonderful! Why is that? Because it keeps one far away from the path of birth and death (16). As it says in the Extensive Enlightenment Sutra: "Even if one meditates for a moment, it is more meaningful for the beings filling the three realms than giving away one's life." Furthermore, meditating on samadhi prevents attachment to desirable qualities, cuts off places of doubt, possesses clairvoyance and samadhi, generates great compassion, sees the true meaning, and has many virtues such as being able to lead disciples to enlightenment. As it says in the Sutra Collection: "Meditation abandons the disparagement of desirable qualities, and manifestly accomplishes lineage, clairvoyance, and samadhi." And as it says in the Ten Wheels of Ksitigarbha: "By meditating on samadhi, doubts will be cut off; without realizing it, others cannot do it. Therefore, meditating on samadhi is supreme; the wise should diligently practice it." And as it says in the Collection of the True Dharma: "By placing the mind evenly, one will see the truth as it is. By seeing the truth as it is (17), the Bodhisattva will enter into great compassion for sentient beings." And as it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Through meditation, one can also establish all beings in the three enlightenments." Like that. The second part includes: briefly explaining the common classifications of samadhi, and extensively explaining the uncommon stages of meditation on Mahamudra. The first part includes: identifying the general definition of samadhi and dispelling doubts, and explaining the classifications of shamatha and vipashyana. The first point is: Although the methods of practicing samadhi in the Greater and Lesser Vehicles are explained in various ways, the distinctions of samadhi that are widely known today are clearly explained in the sutra texts. The intention of these texts can be understood through explanations, as well as the many sutras of the Bhagavan, the Five Treatises of Maitreya, the Stages of Asanga, the Abhidharma-samuccaya of Vasubandhu, and Shantideva's Prajnaparamita instructions (18), which summarize their meanings, and Kamalashila's three stages of Madhyamaka meditation, which are well-known and clear. Therefore, the general meanings of samadhi will be explained as they are stated in these texts. Regarding

I, the collection of samadhi is. From the Sutra Meaning Commentary: Whatever various aspects of samadhi I have taught to the Shravaka assembly, the Bodhisattva assembly, and the Tathagata assembly, all of those should be understood as being collected by Shamatha and Vipashyana. And from the Intermediate Stages of Meditation: Because those two collect all samadhis, therefore all yogis must necessarily cultivate Shamatha and Vipashyana at all times. Thus, all samadhis of the Great and Small Vehicles are said to be collected by Shamatha and Vipashyana. For example, just as a tree has many branches and leaves, but all gather at the root of the trunk. So, how can the various categories of samadhi in the Great and Small Vehicles, such as those with and without objects (19), and the various types of forms and formless in the Mantrayana aspect, and the various samadhis of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality that arise in Mahamudra, be collected into the two categories of Shamatha and Vipashyana? Whether it is with or without an object, with or without a sign, as long as the mind is focused single-pointedly on a virtuous object, it is in accordance with Shamatha. And the wisdom that discerns the meaning of that, all virtuous things, is in accordance with Vipashyana. Similarly, in Mahamudra, whether the mind is high or low, not being distracted from the essential point of one's own meditation is Shamatha, and discerning its meaning and awareness turns towards the side of Vipashyana. Thus, everything is included within Shamatha and Vipashyana. As it says in the Sutra on Faith and Practice in the Great Vehicle: "Son of good family, in this way, whatever faith Bodhisattvas have in the Great Vehicle, whatever arises from the Great Vehicle (20), all of that should be understood as arising from the meaning of an undistracted mind and from truly contemplating the Dharma." Thus, an undistracted mind is a mind focused single-pointedly on its object, and truly contemplating the Dharma is a mind that discerns and distinguishes meanings. Therefore, all the qualities of the Great and Small Vehicles must be accomplished by combining single-pointed concentration on the object with the wisdom that discerns the meaning. As it says in the Final Stages of Meditation: "In this regard, the Bhagavan said that the Bodhisattvas'
