Although the various samādhis, such as the immeasurable and infinite, have been explained, since śamatha and vipaśyanā pervade all samādhis, therefore, the path of uniting śamatha and vipaśyanā should be explained. Thus it is said. Secondly, it is divided into two: the common aspects of śamatha and vipaśyanā, and the stages of meditation for each of śamatha and vipaśyanā. Among the first, there are seven aspects: explaining the causes of śamatha and vipaśyanā, eliminating the obscurations of śamatha and vipaśyanā, identifying the nature of śamatha and vipaśyanā, explaining the differences of śamatha and vipaśyanā, examining the order of śamatha and vipaśyanā, the method of meditating on the union of śamatha and vipaśyanā, and explaining the results of śamatha and vipaśyanā. The first aspect is: In the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*, it says: "Bhagavan, what are the causes of śamatha and vipaśyanā?" Maitreya replied: "They arise from the cause of completely pure morality, and from the cause of completely pure views of hearing and thinking." Je Gampopa also explained the cause in this way, and also said that the arising of śamatha depends on the blessings of the guru, dependent origination, accumulating merit, and purifying obscurations. It is evident that this is also the same for vipaśyanā. In the *Middle Stages of Meditation*, it says: residing in a suitable place, having few desires, being content, abandoning many activities, completely (22) pure morality, and completely abandoning conceptual thoughts are the six causes of śamatha; relying on a noble person, seeking much learning, and properly attending to the mind are the three causes of vipaśyanā. Among them, residing in a suitable place means: it is easy to obtain food and clothing, etc., with little effort; it is a good place because there are no unruly beings such as enemies and wild animals; it is a good land because it is a land that does not cause disease; it is a good friend because it has friends who share the same morality and views; it is comfortable because there are not many people during the day and the sound is small at night. As the *Ornament of the Sūtras* says: The wise one, wherever the place of practice is, is easy to obtain, the dwelling is good, the land is good, the friends are good, and it is endowed with the requisites for the bliss of yoga. Thus it is. Having few desires means: there is no attachment to good or many things such as food and clothing. Being content means: one is always content with obtaining only meager food and clothing. Completely abandoning many activities means: abandoning evil activities such as buying and selling, and with householders and renunciates.

Avoiding overly intimate friends, and refraining from practicing medicine, astrology, and the like. Pure morality means guarding the foundations of training as taught in the vows of individual liberation and the Bodhisattva vows, and if they are broken due to carelessness, repairing them according to the Dharma with repentance. Completely abandoning the conceptual thoughts of desire and the like means contemplating the faults of desire in this life and the next, or contemplating that all things in samsara, whether pleasant or unpleasant, are impermanent and quickly separate from them, thereby abandoning all conceptual thoughts of desire. Relying on a noble person means relying on a virtuous spiritual friend (page 24) who knows the essential points of listening, contemplation, and meditation without error, and who possesses the realization of tranquility and insight. Seeking extensive learning means listening to the undefiled scriptures of definitive meaning and generating the wisdom of hearing, not just hearing about terms and provisional meanings. Proper attention means thinking about the meaning of the definitive meaning that has been heard in the mind, and through subsequent inference, generating an undeviating view as a general meaning. Second, eliminating the obscurations of tranquility and insight, which is divided into identifying the obscurations and explaining the antidotes to eliminate them. First is the identification of the obscurations. The *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* states: "Bhagavan, what are the five obscurations? Among them, some are obscurations of tranquility, some are obscurations of insight, and some are obscurations of both. Maitreya, agitation and regret are obscurations of tranquility. Drowsiness, sleep, and doubt are obscurations of insight. Desire and malice are obscurations of both." Among them, agitation is, as stated in the *Abhidharmasamuccaya*: "What is agitation? It is a division of desire that follows after attractive signs, the mind is not calmed, and it is the function of obstructing tranquility." It refers to being distracted outward in a craving manner towards pleasant and attractive objects, and obstructing the mind from abiding. Regret is, as it says in the same text: "Relying on what has been done and not done, whether virtuous, non-virtuous, or neutral, whether timely or untimely, whether reasonable or unreasonable,
