Not focusing the mind outwardly with a scattered mind, but letting the mind relax, this is the slowness of mind. And "acting mind" refers to, even if dullness and agitation are pacified, the mind cannot settle down, but strives to focus on the object. The second part is divided into: generally explaining the antidotes to obscurations, and specifically explaining how to prevent dullness and agitation. The first part is: Although all the obscurations mentioned above do not explicitly state their respective antidotes, they mostly belong to the categories of dullness and agitation, so by knowing how to prevent them, one can indirectly understand. However, for agitation, meditate on impermanence to make the mind discouraged; for regret, do not bring the object of regret to mind; for dullness, bring pleasant things to mind; for sinking, praise; for sleep, generate the perception of light; for doubt, make the mind focus on one point; for desire, contemplate the faults of desirable objects and contentment; for hatred, generate loving-kindness and the mind of benefiting others, these are crucial. Similarly, the five kinds of distractions should also be understood through these reasons. The *Madhyāntavibhāga* says: "Abandoning five faults, eight mental activities." That is, it speaks of the eight mental activities that abandon the above five faults. Namely, the antidotes to laziness are: faith, aspiration, effort, and pliancy; the antidote to forgetfulness is: mindfulness; the antidote to dullness and agitation is: the knowledge that understands them; the antidote to non-effort is: the mind of effort; the antidote to effort is: equanimity of abiding. Among them, the first three seem easy to understand. Pliancy is: In the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* it says: "What is pliancy? It is the suitability of body and mind to cut off the continuum of the afflictions of body and mind, and it has the function of eliminating all obscurations." The afflictions of body and mind here refer to the inability of body and mind to be used for doing good. Through the power of pliancy, when doing good, the body is free from faults such as heaviness, and gains lightness and happiness, this is bodily suitability; when the mind is directed towards an object, it is free from suffering and gains joy and happiness, this is mental suitability. Teacher Loden said: "Among them, bodily suitability refers to the lightness that arises from being able to perform the body's own actions." Mind

Workability is: the calmness of mind that enters into proper attention, and any other dharma that arises from the mind that becomes the cause of workability. If one possesses it, one can enter the object of focus without hindrance, therefore it is called workability of mind. Thus it is said. Although one does not immediately attain perfect pliancy from the beginning of cultivating samadhi, by diligently obtaining a portion of it, gradually familiarizing oneself with it, one will attain pliancy. Moreover, initially, through the power of attaining mental pliancy, the wind circulates in the body, becoming the cause of attaining physical pliancy. When it pervades the body, as explained in the 'Hearer Grounds,' one attains physical pliancy. Mindfulness is: In the 'Compendium of Categories,' it says: What is mindfulness? It is the mind's non-forgetfulness of familiar objects, having the function of non-distraction. (34) It is explained that: one does not forget the object that one has previously familiarized oneself with, keeps it in mind, and does not allow the mind to be distracted elsewhere. This is like repeatedly recalling something that needs to be done in order not to forget it, so that one does not forget it. Initially, one must repeatedly generate mindfulness. Awareness is: In the 'Commentary on Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes,' it says: Awareness is the discernment of sinking and excitement when mindfulness is not forgotten. That is to say, abiding near mindfulness, one will possess awareness. It is explained that: on the basis of maintaining the aforementioned mindfulness, one is checking and guarding whether it conforms to mindfulness, like a watchman. As it says in 'Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior': When mindfulness dwells at the door of the mind, for the purpose of guarding, then awareness will come. And, one should repeatedly examine the state of body and mind. If one ever (35) abandons it, that is abandoning the characteristic of guarding awareness. Thus it is said. Volition is: In the 'Compendium of Categories,' it says: What is volition? It is the mind's activator, the action of the mind, having the function of causing the mind to engage in virtue, non-virtue, and the unspecified. It is explained that: it is a mental factor that causes the mind to waver and be driven towards any of the three: virtue, non-virtue, or the unspecified. In this case, when awareness discerns sinking and excitement, one engages in volition to abandon sinking and excitement.
