etc. When one sees the mind wandering in the intervals, one should pacify the wandering by contemplating impermanence and other things that cause aversion. Then, one should also strive to let the mind enter that same object without mental activity. Thus it is said. In the Madhyamaka-hrdaya it says: For wandering, one should gather by looking at the faults of wandering. Thus it is said. In the Abhisamayalankara-samgraha, page (41): When the mind becomes scattered, one should reverse it by the method of calming abiding. Thus it is said. In the conduct of this, one should also guard the gates of the senses, avoid violent actions like a sick person, not remember the objects that cause scattering, and prostrate many times, etc. For slight sinking and excitement, if it is sinking, one should lift up and tighten; if it is excitement, one should lower and relax the mind, etc., as is widely known. Third, identifying the nature of calming and insight: In the Samdhinirmocana Sutra it says: He dwells alone in a secluded place, and inwardly makes correct mental application. For the Dharma that has been well thought out, he makes mental application in this way. Whatever sentient being makes mental application, that mind continuously makes mental application inwardly, thus he makes mental application. Having entered in this way and abiding in it many times, whatever arises as physical pliancy and mental pliancy, that is called calming abiding. Thus it is said. Page (42), having obtained physical pliancy and mental pliancy, abiding in that, abandoning the aspects of the mind, for the Dharma that has been thought about, inwardly in the realm of Samadhi, one separately understands and believes as an image. Thus, for those images of the realm of Samadhi, whatever is distinguishing, supremely distinguishing, completely understanding, completely examining, as well as forbearance, desire, differentiation, seeing, and various mental applications for the meaning of what is to be known, that is called insight. Thus it is said. In the Ratnamegha Sutra it says: Calming abiding is one-pointedness of mind. Insight is correctly discriminating. Thus it is said. In the Sutra-alamkara it says: Here, the name of Dharma is also meditation, one should know it as the path of calming abiding. The path of insight is, one should know it as examining those meanings. Thus it is said. Relying on truly abiding, the mind

In order to place the mind on the ground, and in order to thoroughly distinguish the Dharma, it is quiescence and insight. Thus it is said. In its commentary, the teacher Vasubandhu says: Relying on genuine samadhi, in order to place the mind on the mind, and in order to thoroughly distinguish all dharmas, one should know that quiescence and insight are in order. If there is no samadhi, it is not so, this is the nature of quiescence and insight. Thus it is said. Generally speaking, focusing the mind on any object of focus, and the mind abiding single-pointedly without distraction is quiescence, and the mind that distinguishes and distinguishes the meaning to be known in a separate and distinct way is clearly explained as insight. Moreover, from initially focusing the mind on the object of focus and dwelling in a concentrated manner, to eventually making it a single stream and dwelling equally, (44) all is quiescence. From attending to and distinguishing the characteristics of the object of knowledge, to eventually entering into samadhi with the attitude of a wise person and wisdom, all is explained as insight. As it says in the *Yogācārabhūmi*: "Having fixed the mind firmly on an object of focus that is merely an inexpressible thing or merely a meaning, and by attending to the notion of being free from all elaborations and free from all distractions of the mind, when faith arises in all objects of focus, from focusing the mind on the characteristics of inner samadhi and dwelling in a concentrated manner, to extensively making it a single stream and making it samadhi, this is called quiescence." What is insight? It is said that by the attention of having fully cultivated quiescence, the characteristics of those dharmas that have been contemplated, attending to and distinguishing and thoroughly distinguishing and thoroughly distinguishing the dharmas, to extensively (45) entering into samadhi with a wise person and wisdom, whatever this is, is called insight. Thus it is said. The object of focus of quiescence and insight is that the aspect of not distinguishing other than the object of knowledge is quiescence, and the object of focus of insight is the aspect of having distinctions on the object of knowledge. As it says in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "Bhagavan, what is the object of focus of quiescence? The Buddha said: It is one. Like this, not distinguishing."
