It is just like that. As it is said, it also appears in other stages of meditation. Second, (342) when meditating on shamatha samadhi before, the main thing was to rely on non-conceptual samadhi for settling meditation. But now, when meditating on vipassana, while not letting the mind wander to other things, from the state of shamatha, generate the clarity of the mind. With discriminating wisdom, examine and analyze one's own mind. This is the main analytical meditation. Moreover, at this time, determining the essence of mind itself is equivalent to determining the selflessness of the person in the Sutra tradition. Regarding its method, the body posture is the same as before, but the way of looking is to look with the eyes not directly closed. The great Brahmin said, "The yoga in which the eyes are not closed is not meditation." Elsewhere it is also said, "The yogi who does not close his eyes is superior to all yogas." It is also said, "The heretical Brahma looks upwards, the Shravaka looks downwards in peace, the Vajra eyes (343) look straight ahead." This is the view. Then, settle into the shamatha samadhi of clear and non-conceptual awareness. From that state, use one's own mind to look at the nature of mind, whichever is comfortable, whether looking outwards or inwards, look nakedly. What shape and color does that mind have? What place and thing does it rely on? What are its recognition and changes? Examine and analyze them in order. Regarding shape, is it round, square, etc.? Is it the shape of earth, stone, rock, etc.? Is it the shape of humans and animals? Observe. Regarding color, is it white, blue, red, etc.? Observe. Regarding the basis and location, does the mind exist relying on external objects of the environment and beings? Or does it exist relying on one's own body internally (344)? Observe. If it is thought to exist in one's own body, does it exist in the parts and pieces from the crown of the head to the soles of the feet? Or does it exist universally in the whole body? Observe. If it exists universally, does it exist in the manner of inside and outside, or in the manner of being mixed? Observe. If it is mixed, how does the mind go when it spreads to external objects such as form? Observe. Regarding recognition and change, is that mind emp

First, examine whether it has an identifiable shape or characteristics, or whether it has a clear identification and characteristics. If it is emptiness, then observe how it is empty, whether it is emptiness like space, or emptiness of nothingness. If it is clear, then observe whether it is clear like the sun and moon or a candle emitting light, or whether it is self-illuminating without light and color. Examine and analyze from various aspects. If only the knowledge and understanding that has been heard arises in the mind, and it is not examined, then one cannot deeply understand the state of the mind, nor can one make a decision. (345) One must examine the mind as thoroughly as if using a stone or bone. After examining in this way, even if one is convinced that external and internal things are not truly existent as they appear, one should meditate on the mind abiding in a clear and empty state. Merely the arising of past states and experiences does not deeply understand the state of the mind. Pray with strong devotion, and then again, if it is clear, in the way it is clear, if it is empty, in the way it is empty, carefully observe and analyze. Although one cannot clearly express in words the shape, color, location, what it relies on, identification, and state, it is like the mind that is not light and color, but is self-knowing and self-illuminating. Like self-emptiness without anything to identify. When there is awareness, there is a slight, ethereal experience. When awareness is distracted, it disappears and becomes an ordinary, heavy feeling. (346) If one can deeply understand this, then this experience has arisen. At that time, even without the identification of "this is my mind," rely on the clear awareness of the self-knowing and self-illuminating mind, and maintain it without distraction for even a moment. While conducting this observation and analysis, analyze with the wisdom of discriminating awareness in an undistracted state. Do not analyze after awareness is distracted, like an ordinary person thinking. As the great Brahmin said: "Alas! Symbolize it with yourself and observe it. If one is separated from the observation of the undistracted mind, the distracted mind cannot see it." And as stated in the Stages of Meditation: "Thus, when the mind is focused on the object of calm abiding, if one thoroughly examines with wisdom, the light of correct wisdom will arise." And so on. Third is: To practice on those objects that have just been mentioned

Regarding the term of searching for the mind (347), some say that since the mind is not established as a real entity, there is nothing to search for, and searching for something that doesn't exist is meaningless. This is because they are ignorant of the essential point of ultimate truth. Regarding the term of searching for the mind, the Ratnakuta Sutra says, "Thus, completely search for the mind," and so on. The Ushnisharatnakara Sutra also says, "That mind is to be sought everywhere," and so on. The Thirty-third Chapter also says, "The wise person seeks the nature of the mind. When seeking the nature of the mind, when seeing the mind and the nature of the mind, by what mind does that mind seek? That mind also does not see its own nature." And so on, many things are said. Although the mind is not established as a real entity, searching for it through investigation is for the purpose of realizing that the mind is empty by its very nature. As quoted in the Noble Cloud of Jewels Meditation Sequence (348), "Therefore, by meditating on emptiness extensively, if one completely seeks the nature of whatever places the mind wanders to and whatever places the mind clearly delights in, one will realize emptiness. Whatever the mind is, if one investigates it, one will realize emptiness. Whatever the mind realizes, if one completely seeks its nature, one will realize emptiness. By realizing it in this way, one enters into signless yoga." Like that. Then, the method of examining the mind or searching for the mind is, as stated in the Noble Ratnakuta Sutra, "Showing the Indivisible Nature of the Dharmadhatu," "Venerable ones, is this mind something called blue? Is it something called yellow?" Combine it like this: red, white, madder, like the color of glass, true, untrue, permanent, impermanent, with form, without form (349)? Realize! They said: Venerable ones, the mind is without form, cannot be indicated, without appearance, without obstruction, without location, not a discriminator. Then, the emanation monk said this to those monks: Venerable ones, does that mind which is without form, cannot be indicated, without appearance, without obstruction, without location, not a discriminator, reside inside? Does it reside outside?
