of. Those who are blinded by ignorance, even if they reach the peak of existence, still create suffering-producing samsara. Those who follow your teachings, even if they have not attained the actual practice of meditative absorption, can avert samsara like wiping away the cataract of the demon's eye (326). Thus it is said. These are the explanations of how to guide through the door of śamatha. The second is to guide through the door of vipaśyanā, which includes: the reason for practicing vipaśyanā, relying on the application of vipaśyanā, the classification of vipaśyanā practice methods, the appropriate vipaśyanā practice method, the difference between vipaśyanā arising and not arising, and the six ways in which this vipaśyanā is combined with other practices. First, one should not be content with just the śamatha samādhi mentioned earlier, but in order to seek liberation and omniscience, one must definitely practice vipaśyanā with the aspect of selflessness. If one does not practice it, śamatha can only temporarily suppress the afflictions, but cannot eliminate the latent tendencies, and therefore cannot be liberated from samsara. The Middle Stages of Meditation says: "By merely becoming accustomed to śamatha, practitioners do not eliminate the obscurations, but only temporarily suppress the afflictions. Without the arising of the light of wisdom, the latent tendencies will not be completely eliminated." Therefore, the noble One in the Explanation of the Thought that is Definitely Ascertained says: "Meditation suppresses the afflictions, while wisdom completely destroys the latent tendencies." Thus it was taught. It is said that if one wishes to eliminate all obscurations and generate completely pure wisdom, one should abide in śamatha and practice wisdom. The King of Samādhi Sūtra also says: "In the world, there are those who practice samādhi, but they do not eliminate the notion of self. This only intensifies the afflictions, so one should practice this superior samādhi. If one separately realizes the selflessness of phenomena, and separately examines and practices it, this is the cause for obtaining the fruit of nirvāṇa. No other cause can bring about peace." That is to say, in the world, there are those who practice the four dhyānas and other (328) samādhis, but that alone cannot eliminate the root of samsara, which is self-grasping.

It cannot be abandoned, and with its power, it again generates root and near afflictions, and from evil deeds, etc., it turns into evil destinies. For example, like the ascetics of external paths who practice samadhi. Furthermore, if one contemplates and meditates on the dharma of selflessness with the wisdom of discriminating awareness, it is the cause of attaining the fruit of nirvana. Apart from that, no other cause can fundamentally pacify suffering and afflictions. This is the meaning. Secondly, in the *Sandhinirmocana Sutra*, it is said that the pure view of hearing and thinking is the cause of vipashyana (insight). In the *Middle Stages of Meditation*, it is said that relying on a noble person, seeking much learning, and proper attention are the three causes for the arising of vipashyana (insight). A noble person here refers to a virtuous spiritual friend who possesses realization of shamatha and vipashyana. If one does not possess realization, even if one is skilled in the terminology of provisional meaning (329), the meaning will not be accomplished. Seeking much learning also means seeking the undefiled definitive scriptures. Even if one hears the dharma of terminology and provisional meaning, it does not reveal the definitive meaning. Proper attention must also be practiced with the instructions transmitted from accomplished masters. Because ultimate truth is not an object that can be examined and analyzed by speculative intellect. So, what is the difference between scriptures of provisional meaning and definitive meaning? That which mainly explains conventional truth, words, letters, etc., is of provisional meaning, and that which explains ultimate truth and profound, difficult to understand, is said to be of definitive meaning. As stated in the *Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra*: "What is a sutra of definitive meaning? What is a sutra of provisional meaning? Those sutras that explain the establishment of conventional truth are called provisional meaning. Those sutras that explain the establishment of ultimate truth are called definitive meaning. Those sutras that explain various words and letters are called provisional meaning. Those sutras that explain the profound, difficult to see, difficult to understand (330) are called definitive meaning." And so on. Then, what are conventional truth and ultimate truth themselves? That which shows the arising and ceasing of self, sentient beings, life, nourishment, etc., as not different is conventional truth, and that which shows emptiness such as selflessness and non-arising is definitive meaning.
