The masters of this lineage consider shamatha meditation to be merely the foundation or starting point. Even without attaining genuine pliancy, being able to cultivate shamatha effortlessly, or with only slight effort and ease, is considered shamatha, and it can lead to vipassanā. They also believe that the meditation combining shamatha and vipassanā can be divided into three stages. Therefore, here, the emphasis is not on shamatha alone, but on finding the virtuous practice that combines shamatha and vipassanā. However, apart from the difference in the samadhi to be cultivated, the way of entering into samadhi, where one becomes accustomed to the object of meditation through mindfulness, awareness, and effort, and eventually enters the state of meditation effortlessly, is the same in all aspects. Therefore, in this case, for those who progress gradually, it is best if shamatha is firmly established. As it says in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "By the vipassanā that is fully endowed with shamatha." And in the teachings of the Kagyu lineage: "Without shamatha, one cannot see vipassanā. With vipassanā as a pillow, there is no shamatha." Seventh, the necessity of cultivating shamatha is: In general, for the root of all activities, both worldly and transcendental, it is necessary to cultivate shamatha. That is, in the worldly path, in order to abandon the afflictions included in the desire realm of the three realms, it is necessary to generate the antidote that is contrary to the afflictions, and it is necessary to cultivate vipassanā that has the aspect of seeing the desire realm as coarse and the form realm as peaceful, therefore shamatha is needed as a basis. Similarly, in order to cultivate the eight preparatory stages of meditation and the eight actual meditations included in the form and formless realms, it is also necessary to cultivate vipassanā that has the aspect of seeing the lower realms as coarse and the higher realms as peaceful, therefore shamatha is also needed as a basis. In the transcendental path, the Hinayana practitioners take the Four Noble Truths as their object and generate vipassanā that refutes the self of the person, therefore shamatha is also needed as a basis. The Mahayana practitioners take the meaning of both selflessnesses as their object and generate vipassanā of non-dual wisdom, therefore shamatha is also needed as a basis. Moreover, the four legs of miraculous powers, the samadhi of the form and formless realms, the eight liberations, and the superknowledges.

And also, stillness is needed as a basis for accomplishing qualities such as diminution, subjugation, and so forth. As it says in the First Stage of Meditation: "If one possesses these eight abandonments, then samadhi will be very firm, and it will accomplish all qualities such as miraculous powers." Therefore, in the Sutra it is said: "Meditate on the legs of miraculous powers that possess eight abandonments." That single-pointed mind possesses the very nature of becoming more and more workable, and it obtains the names of dhyana and formless (324) absorption, which have obtained the distinction of qualities such as the object of focus, and liberation, and so forth. So it is said. Furthermore, there are many needs for stillness, such as suppressing manifest afflictive thoughts and becoming liberated from the bonds of signs. However, the main purpose of practicing here is for the sake of accomplishing insight, and there are two types of insight: worldly insight that goes up to the peak of existence, which has the aspect of quiescence and agitation, and insight that has the aspect of selflessness, which abandons the seeds of existence from the root. It is practiced for the sake of generating the latter. The reason why it is necessary to practice it is that insight without stillness is very wavering like flowing water or a lamp in the wind, and it will not remain steady. If it does not remain steady, it will not know or be clear as it is. As it says in the First Stage of Meditation: "Because the mind wavers like water, it cannot remain without the basis of stillness. The mind that does not remain steady cannot know as it is." And as it says in the Middle Stage of Meditation: "Insight alone, separated from stillness, will cause the yogi's mind to be distracted towards objects. It will not be stable like a lamp in the wind. Therefore, the light of wisdom will not be very clear." Like that. So, how much stillness should be practiced in this case? If one can accomplish just the stillness included in the preliminary stage of the first dhyana mentioned above, that is most praised. If that is not accomplished, it seems that it is acceptable to accomplish just a single-pointed mind of desire. As the teacher Hero says in the Praises Worthy of Praise: Your Dharma does not favor.
