If combined with the four actions, first, one must strive to focus the mind intently on samadhi, so one enters with concentration. Then, when dullness and agitation interrupt, one enters intermittently. When they cannot interrupt, one enters continuously. Finally, when one enters effortlessly and naturally, it is the spontaneous accomplishment of entry. These principles have already been explained. Such a state of mind, even below the sixth mind, through faith and strong mindfulness in samadhi, generates the power of effortful diligence, thereby accomplishing the seventh and eighth minds. Through the power of habituation, without much effort, naturally and spontaneously, the ninth mind arises, going into samadhi. Moreover, when one is extremely habituated, initially, with the memory of the intention to meditate on samadhi, one abides in equipoise once. Usually, without needing to particularly hold mindfulness, one smoothly enters into samadhi. For example, like reading or reciting that is not yet mastered, one needs to generate varying degrees of effort of concentrated mindfulness. But when one is skilled, apart from the initial intention, there is no need for continuous effort of mindfulness, and it arises naturally. Such a samadhi with the experience of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality will naturally blend the main practice and post-practice. To this, those who are not skilled may consider it a good practice, but only regard it as an experiential manifestation of the state of mind. This is definitely not the practice recognized by this lineage. So, is such a state characterized by śamatha and vipaśyanā, or not? In the stages of meditation in the sutra tradition, śamatha is established after obtaining pliability. If pliability is not obtained, no matter how good the samadhi is, it is only a one-pointed mind included in the desire realm. Not to mention the actual dhyana included in the higher realms, it is not even considered a preparatory stage. Because it is said that one must obtain pliability to obtain the preparatory stage. Thus, a one-pointed mind in the desire realm is established as being in accordance with śamatha, and the name of the ground of non-equipoise. For the dhyana of the higher realms, the name of the ground of equipoise is established. How does a one-pointed mind in the desire realm gradually obtain pliability, etc.? It is itself blissful, clear...

With the power of having both investigation and analysis, without fear in maintaining samadhi, joy increases, and first, mental pliancy and bliss are generated. Through this power, the continuous wind of physical pliancy runs through the body. When this wind pervades the body, the manner in which physical pliancy and bliss arise is explained in the Śrāvakabhūmi. After this pliancy arises, when one possesses the six mental activities of being aware and having faith in thirty-three (319) things, as well as extreme solitude, gathering joy, observation, and ultimate union, then it transforms into the preliminary concentration of the first dhyana, which is included in the realm of form. Thereafter, it is said that one gradually accomplishes dhyanas and formless absorptions, etc. As stated in the Stages of Meditation: Thus, when one is in a state of equanimity and possesses both investigation and analysis, it is called unobstructed, which is the mind of application in the first dhyana. When one is free from desire and sinful dharmas, and possesses investigation, analysis, joy, and happiness, it is called the first dhyana. From the first dhyana itself, the mere absence of investigation is called a special dhyana. When one is free from investigation and analysis, (320) free from desire for the realm of the first dhyana, and possesses joy, happiness, and complete inner clarity, it is called the second dhyana. When one is free from desire for the realm of the second dhyana, and possesses happiness, equanimity, mindfulness, and clear comprehension, it is called the third dhyana. When one is free from desire for the realm of the third dhyana, and is neither suffering nor happiness, and possesses equanimity and mindfulness, it is called the fourth dhyana. And so on, but I will not elaborate further here for fear of prolixity. When one obtains pliancy, even if one remains in samadhi for many days, at that time, the coarse afflictions of both body and mind will be cut off. Because the body and mind obtain happiness, one is able to enter samadhi. For example, Je Dagpo placed a butter lamp on his head for thirteen days (321) and was able to remain in samadhi, and this is how it happens. However, practice
