The method of taming the mind is like a waterfall in a canyon, because the mind with karma (314) is very agitated and unstable. Then, because the power of habit increases, most of the coarse thoughts are calmed, or even if they are not calmed, they become subtle and latent, so they do not interrupt, and it is slightly easier to tame, like the Ganges River flowing slowly, mostly abiding on the mind-abiding, and sometimes relying on various external conditions, the strong agitation of thoughts does not fall under control. Then, all subtle and coarse thoughts do not arise, or even if subtle thoughts arise slightly, they will self-extinguish and self-purify, like the mother and child meeting and merging into the great ocean, all arising feelings merge into the realm of awareness and become one, and cannot be shaken by the waves of thoughts. In this way, it can be summarized into three stages of mind-abiding, or combined with the nine types of mind-abiding mentioned in the Sutra, first, collecting the scattered mind and focusing on the object of meditation, so that the mind of abiding can be achieved. Similarly, not (315) letting the mind wander to other places, maintaining this state, is continuous abiding; even if it wanders to other places, focusing on the object of meditation again, is re-abiding; repeatedly collecting and refining the mind, is near-abiding; seeing the merits of meditation and striving to practice, is taming; seeing the faults of distraction and pacifying distraction, is pacifying; if the faults of attachment and other thoughts arise in meditation, also pacifying these faults, is the most pacifying; habituating meditation with intentional effort, is one-pointedness; after becoming accustomed to it, entering meditation naturally and effortlessly, is equanimity. In this way, these minds can be achieved. As the Ornament of the Sutras says: "The mind is fixed on the object of meditation, and not allowed to be distracted." etc., that is the meaning. Combining with the six powers, hearing the key points of meditation is the power of hearing, (316) practicing these key points is the power of thinking, unscattered mindfulness is the power of mindfulness, knowing dullness and excitement is the power of awareness, striving to practice meditation is the power of diligence, and becoming very accustomed is the power of familiarity.
