If subtle conceptualizations (305) are generated to examine whether the object of focus is abiding or not, and whether dullness and agitation have arisen or not, then it will not become non-conceptual. If they are not generated, then the awareness that recognizes dullness, agitation, etc., will not arise, so what should be done? O, unwise ones! If you regard such subtle conceptualizations as faults, then although it may seem that you are maintaining a state where there is no clarity of awareness, but only some degree of mental clarity, such subtle conceptualizations are not conceptualizations in their own right. Rather, they are the awareness or intelligence that is concordant with insight (vipashyana), so they must be generated. As it says in the "Middle Stages of Meditation": "Thus, having placed the mind on the object that is desired, one should repeatedly and continuously place the mind on it. Having closely placed it, one should examine the mind in this way: Is the mind well-holding the object? Or is it dull? Or is it scattered and distracted by wandering to external objects?" Like that. The way to generate such conceptualizations is not to generate them after letting go of the continuous stream of unforgetting mindfulness, but rather to merely observe while not losing the state of samadhi (306). However, if this conceptualization is generated too frequently with too much force, then faulty conceptualizations that have lost mindfulness will arise. Therefore, while the force of the previous ascertainment has not yet been exhausted, the subsequent ones should merely observe. In short, one should skillfully maintain it like managing the balance of tension and relaxation. This method is the crucial point of all meditation practices. In short, the mind that possesses a continuous stream of mindfulness that remembers the object of focus, that is free from the faults of dullness and agitation, and that possesses the joy of relaxing the mind, is called samadhi. In this context, the object of focus is non-conceptual and possesses clarity and awareness. It is like that continuous stream of mindfulness and awareness. As it says in the "Stages of the Hearers": "What is single-pointedness of mind? It is said: The stream of mind that is in accordance with repeated recollection, that is focused on an object, that possesses continuity, that is free from faults, and that possesses joy (307), that is also called samadhi, and is also called virtuous single-pointedness of mind." Like that. Among these, "repeated recollection" refers to situations where one's attention is distracted by listening and thinking in between.

Explanation of how to enter into Samadhi: As it says itself, if someone asks, "What should one repeatedly remember for Samadhi?" The answer is, one should focus on those Dharmas that have been grasped and heard, and the teachings and instructions received from the Lamas. In order to manifest the state of Samadhi, one should follow and focus on that object with continuous mindfulness. That is (what the text says). Fifth, the way to cultivate mind-abiding with these methods is: one should understand each session of cultivating Samadhi. That is, when beginning to practice Samadhi, one must first generate faith, the desire for knowledge, (308) diligence, and pliancy towards it through remembering the qualities of Samadhi, and then begin to practice. If these four activities are not generated, one will not be happy to practice Samadhi and will be influenced by laziness. Then, for the faultless Samadhi itself mentioned above, one must continuously rely on strong mindfulness that does not distract the mind elsewhere and does not forget it. If the power of this mindfulness is not strong enough, forgetfulness will arise and one will not be able to grasp the object. Then, on the basis of that mindfulness, one must generate sharp awareness that can distinguish sinking and excitement, and one must closely observe whether the faults of sinking and excitement have occurred. If one does not have clear or definite awareness, one will not be able to recognize the obstacles and faults of Samadhi. Then, if sinking and excitement occur, one must strive to eliminate these faults according to the methods mentioned earlier. If this effort is not enough, one will be influenced by sinking and excitement, and faultless Samadhi will not arise. Then, when the faults of sinking and excitement have subsided, one must abandon the mind's fabrication and settle the mind in (309) peaceful equanimity. If one does not rely on this equanimity, Samadhi will be scattered and one will not be able to maintain tranquility. This method is stated in the Madhyantavibhāga: 'The place and dwelling there, the cause and the result itself, not forgetting the object, distinguishing sinking and excitement, eliminating them, manifesting fabrication, entering into peace when peaceful.' This is the meaning of what is said. Some people initially develop faith in Samadhi.
