It is mistaken to think that it is the speech of this occasion of manifestation of speech. Moreover, those who say that confusion arises because the mind's awareness becomes relaxed and that meditation is confused are merely wanting to speak while being extremely ignorant of the matter. That speech is like the words of Sarahā above, and also Tilopa: "Leave it in its natural, uncontrived state. If you release the bonds, there is no doubt that you will be liberated." And Sarahā said: "Whatever you are attached to, let it go." As these teachings say, such terminology is used as a method of breaking down the clinging to experience during the actual meditation. The great accomplished Shang said: "When awareness (301) is released with relaxation, the experience of non-thought arises, like the center of pure space. That is the clear light Dharmakāya." Thus, if one does not know how to relax the mind and the awareness diminishes, remaining obscured by thick dullness is considered a fault. Who would consider that to be the ultimate relaxation and meditation? Therefore, one should not speak falsely by denying the truth. Therefore, if one does not know how to relax and falls into a slump, and becomes distracted or confused, or unaware of whether one is confused or not, and becomes blank and dazed, it is because the power of awareness is weak. If, while being aware, there is a vague or turbulent movement, it is because the relaxation is weak, or the desire is too strong, so one should know the state of balanced tension and relaxation. In short, if the previous awareness creates the power of being aware and knowing, then beginners do not need to repeatedly generate mindfulness on top of that, but should relax and let it be. When the power of awareness is exhausted (302), one should slightly raise the awareness again and tighten it slightly. One should know the method of practice that eliminates the faults of the practice. By generating it in this way, the awareness will remain clear, bright, and unwavering, and in that state, the appearances of seeing and hearing forms, sounds, etc., will not cease, but will appear clearly, brightly, fearlessly, and openly, then śamatha has arisen. Secondly, based on the methods of finding a place for the mind that have been explained in sequence above, when a flawless samādhi of śamatha has finally arisen, in that samādhi, the mind remains single-pointedly in a state of non-conceptualization, and with mindfulness and

In any case, it is absolutely necessary to have a combination of unwavering clarity of awareness and mindfulness. If the mind does not remain single-pointedly on the object of focus, but is distracted by various thoughts; or even if it is not distracted, it is in a dull state of lost mindfulness; or even if it has not lost subtle mindfulness, it is in a state of dullness without clarity of mind, these are faults of samadhi. Among them, the lack of clarity of awareness of mindfulness (303) is the fault of laxity, and the mind not remaining single-pointedly is the fault of excitement. Therefore, the method of eliminating the faults of laxity and excitement is very important. This has already been explained, and will be explained again. In summary, when there is laxity, one should generate mindfulness and clarity of mind, and make an effort to lift oneself up; when there is excitement, one should relax the desire to focus the mind on the object of focus, and appropriately relax the intention. When tightness and looseness are balanced and things go as desired, one should not engage in other observations and analyses, but simply maintain that state, not losing it, and prolonging it. As Nagarjuna's "Equal Union of the Four Times" says: "When dull and heavy, praise and uplift; When scattered and floating, remain in your own place." Therefore, of the two, mindfulness and awareness, mindfulness keeps the mind from being distracted from the object of focus, while awareness makes one aware of whether one is distracted and of dullness and excitement. That is, one should strongly generate the desire not to be distracted from the object of focus even for a moment, and maintain that state, keeping in mind not to forget it. In this state, one should use awareness to observe whether one is distracted and the faults of dullness and excitement, without engaging in too much observation and analysis, but simply paying attention. Regarding this, in the Sutra tradition, there are many explanations of mindfulness and awareness, while in the instructions of the Practice Lineage, there are many cases where it is summarized as mindfulness or simply mindfulness. If someone wonders why this is so, there is no fault. As the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way" says: "When mindfulness guards the door of the mind, awareness follows like a shadow." This explains that mindfulness and awareness are distinguished from the perspective of coarse and fine, or rough and subtle, because awareness is included within clear and powerful mindfulness. Similarly, in the commentary on the "Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes," it is said: "When mindfulness abides, it becomes associated with awareness." At this time, wise ones! When mindfulness and awareness cause the mind to focus single-pointedly on the object of focus,
