Instead of fabricating effort, one should let it rest naturally. Due to weak mindfulness, the portion of mental wandering increases. Because of unclear awareness, one cannot recognize the faults of excitement and sinking. Even if one recognizes them, one considers them to be thoughts to be abandoned, thereby denigrating the clarity of awareness. One cannot recognize faultless samadhi, and instead mistakes various experiences for samadhi. Sometimes, even if various faultless samadhis arise, one does not stabilize them, but is instead disturbed by various mental fabrications of distraction (310). These are people who are not skilled in the methods of practicing samadhi. Therefore, beginners should first cultivate strong mindfulness. Then, for those whose minds are prone to excitement, the fault of imitative excitement will arise. When one recognizes and eliminates the fault with awareness, the gross excitement subsides, but subtle thoughts of distraction will faintly appear. At this time, one should not be too attached, but slightly relax the intention, and the subtle thoughts will naturally subside. Afterwards, in order to prevent gross and subtle sinking from obscuring the clarity of the mind, one should be wary of sinking and tighten up slightly. If one does this, one will be liberated from the two extremes of sinking and excitement, and faultless samadhi will arise. According to this reasoning, for those whose minds are prone to sinking, one should eliminate gross and subtle sinking, and then be wary of excitement, practice samadhi, and when faultless samadhi arises. If there are too many thoughts or too much effort, it will become a great obstacle to the stability of samadhi, so one should maintain the initial state of samadhi, in a state of equanimity. And mindfulness is to generate the power of mindfulness with strong intention (311) and grasp it. When the power is sufficient, the mind will never wander from the object. Slightly beginning to wander is that the power of mindfulness is slightly weakened. Wandering is the loss of mindfulness. Therefore, before the power of the previous mindfulness has weakened and disappeared, one should generate the power of mindfulness again. In short, just like adding mindfulness on top of mindfulness, one should make the power of mindfulness continuous from beginning to end. Awareness arises from strong mindfulness. It only observes in an observational way whether the faults of sinking and excitement have arisen. Apart from that, excessive analysis, research, and associations are not allowed here.

It is because it becomes an obstacle. Effort or attention is, when dullness and agitation arise, it is only to manifest attention in order to eliminate them. Once dullness and agitation have been eliminated, it should not be done that way, because generating mental attention and making the mind unmoving are contradictory. Moreover, in the latter two parts of the Stages of Meditation (312), it is said, "If effort is made when the mind is entering into equanimity, then at that time it will become distracted." That is why it is said. Equanimity is, when the faults of dullness and agitation have subsided and the tension is balanced, then let the mind rest in that, abandoning effort or mental attention, skillfully maintaining that samadhi, as it says in the Middle Stages of Meditation: "When there is no dullness or agitation, and one sees the mind resting comfortably on that object, then relax effort and practice equanimity, and at that time one should remain as long as one desires." Like that. So, how should the length of a session be done in such a way? For a beginner, if a session is too long, the power of mindfulness and awareness will be lost due to force and habit, forgetfulness will arise, and distraction will occur, and the faults of dullness and agitation will not be quickly recognized, and one will be controlled by distraction and dullness and agitation, so one should meditate repeatedly in short sessions. After becoming a little accustomed, because one is skilled in guarding mindfulness and awareness, (313) if the samadhi is flawlessly established, then even if a session is a little longer, there will be no fault. In short, as long as there is no obstacle to samadhi in body and mind, one should remain in equanimity, and when obstacles arise, one should eliminate the faults of the obstacles and meditate, but there is no fixed duration for a session. Thus, here, all the essential points of how to cultivate abiding in the mind have been explained, and the obstacles or obscurations of tranquility, and the recognition of the actions to abandon them, and all that is known about them, have already been explained in the general discussion of tranquility and insight, so I will not elaborate further. Sixth, the stages of accomplishing abiding in the mind are: The great accomplished one Tilopa said, "The activity is initially like a waterfall in a gorge, in the middle like the Ganges flowing slowly, and finally like waters meeting mother and child." Although this is not necessarily limited to the occasion of abiding, it can be applied, that is, for the initial practitioner, in the midst of the confusion of many coarse and subtle thoughts, one finds various kinds of non-conceptual abiding.
