Also, one should meditate on cultivating merit through a hundred virtues. It is said extensively, and in the Samadhiraja Sutra, it also says, "With a body like the color of gold." etc., as quoted before, and it is also stated in the final stage of the Stages of Meditation. Among the many stages of meditation that have been taught, finding a place for the mind to rest is best accomplished by focusing on one object that pleases the mind, as taught by the noble hero and Jowo Je. Once a place for the mind has been found, one can train in any object, as taught in the first stage of the Stages of Meditation. For example, in the Sutra tradition, there are many teachings on taming the behavior and taming the afflictions, etc., and their methods are as previously explained. For these methods, the Kagyu lineage masters physically place objects such as pebbles (280) and pieces of wood as supports for mind-holding, or they focus their minds on supports such as bindus, and therefore they are called "having supports." Secondly, in general, there are many distinctions in the abiding of the mind, but for the moment, in this context, it is to accomplish the aspect of abiding without mental fabrication. As Tilopa said: "Let the activities of the body be completely abandoned, rest naturally. Let the speech of the mouth not be much, like the echo of a cliff. Do not think in the mind, look to the Dharma of the Lama." And, as taught by the master Dignaga: "Grasping and the grasped, both and not both, self and other, and nirvana, many conceptual thoughts called samsara, should always be abandoned, and the mind should be placed in equanimity." Like that. Thus, for the abiding of the mind in this context, it is mostly difficult to arise a flawless samadhi of calm abiding. Relying on those objects of focus, one turns away from the previous state of the mind going wild and unrestrained. In a state of non-distracted mindfulness, without letting conceptual thoughts scatter anywhere, the mind relaxes, like a butter lamp (281), and if it arises for a long or short time, then one has found a little bit of a place to rest. While abiding in that way, one cuts it off sharply. Rest for a little while, and then cultivate it again as before. Also, if dullness arises, where there are no conceptual thoughts but one has lost mindfulness, then it is faulty, so one should exert effort and generate the strength of mindfulness, and cultivate it briefly again and again. If one abides in a sinking state without losing mindfulness, then the force of that fault will be eliminated, so for a while, one should cultivate just that briefly. In a state of mindfulness, it becomes as if many conceptual thoughts have arisen.

If the abiding-portion is small, then the previous thoughts have already passed like flowing water, and have not been recognized. Here, one recognizes that one thought has arisen, two thoughts have arisen, and one has slightly obtained the abiding-portion. Therefore, do not consider it a fault. Relax the mind's desires as much as possible, and do not bend the head of thoughts, nor follow after them. In the state of slightly rejecting and establishing, be without distraction. Furthermore, if the state of the mind's abiding and scattering does not involve any confusion (282), then one's intelligence is slightly dull. In response to that, after a sudden loud sound, in the interval between the cessation of the previous thought and the non-arising of the subsequent thought, the mind suddenly becomes dazed, and a state of blankness arises. Understand that that is an indication of non-thought. By continuing in that way for a short time, one will accomplish the abiding-portion. This very method should also be understood in relation to the various wind-supported objects of focus that will be explained later. Second, without support, there are two types: with wind and without wind. First, with wind, there are two types: holding the mind with counting the breath, and holding the mind with filling. The first is: In general, the method of accomplishing mind-abiding by relying on the breath is taught in both the sutras and tantras. Here, Tilopa also said: "If a person of inferior intelligence does not abide in the and, grasp the key point of the breath, and abandon awareness into the essence." In the stages of meditation of the sutra tradition, because there are many conceptual thoughts, regarding the method of meditation that speaks of meditating on the breath, in the auto-commentary of the Treasury, it says: "Counting, following, and placing, (283) thought, transformation, and purification, are considered to be six aspects." Among these, counting is: exhaling and inhaling, from twenty-one to the interval between a water-bowl and an hour, counting without confusing the numbers, holding the mind by focusing on counting. Following is: after that, focusing on whether this breath enters the entire body or only a part, thus following and returning to the ultimate end of the entire body. Placing is: placing the mind without discriminating differences in everything. Thought is: thinking that the nature of the breath is not apparent. Transformation is: transforming the mind that focuses on the breath into another object of focus for calm abiding. Purification is: meditating in non-thought, in which the thoughts of grasper and grasped are completely purified. In the tantra tradition, the types of breath meditation are said to be extremely numerous, but I will not elaborate because I fear prolixity. Here, it is the practice lineage.
