If transformed, one can know how to enter, and those who have many conceptual thoughts (can hear) the key instructions and knowledge of this lineage. It is said in the Listening Place: The physical conduct quickly generates physical pliancy, and it can make time (272) pass for a long time, and the body will not become very tired, and this conduct is different from that of the heretics and external debaters, and this conduct, if one sees it dwelling, will generate great joy, and this conduct is practiced by the Buddhas and their Shravakas, so it should be relied upon. The third is that one must enter the object of meditation with a joyful attitude towards meditating on Samadhi, which depends on seeing the qualities of Samadhi. The qualities are as stated in the Sutra: If this Dharma is not meditated upon, the nature of Dharma will not be seen. Just as seeing and hearing water, how can thirst be quenched without drinking it? This is the general reason for practicing Dharma. In the Compendium, it says: Through meditation, one abandons contempt for the qualities of desire. Intelligence, direct perception, and Samadhi are manifestly accomplished. And so on, these are the general qualities of meditation. In particular, if Shamatha is accomplished, (273) joy and happiness will increase in body and mind, and the mind can be used for the object of meditation, and the mind will naturally calm down from distorted distractions, preventing many misdeeds, and accomplishing qualities such as clairvoyance and miracles, and based on this, insight will arise, and once it arises, if it is protected, one will quickly be liberated from existence, etc., seeing the temporary and ultimate qualities, and entering through remembering them. This is stated in the Madhyantavibhāga: "The place and dwelling in it, the cause and the effect itself." It is said that the place is the place of effort, which is the strong desire to seek Samadhi. Dwelling in it is great effort, which is the ability to continuously exert diligence. The cause is the cause of desire, which is the faith that attracts the mind after seeing the qualities of Samadhi. The fruit is the fruit of effort, which is the attainment of physical pliancy in body and mind. In this way, one should know these principles, (274) and then focus the mind on the object of meditation. Fourth, there are two types of objects of meditation: those with signs and those without signs. The first type has two types: those with support and those without support. The first type is:
