Now, from the oral instructions, we will explain the method of cultivating abiding-mind based on counting breaths (284) and filling with breath. Regarding counting breaths: In the Sutra of the Ten Wheels of Ksitigarbha, it says, "How does one contemplate the breath going in and out with mindfulness, just as it is? It is by counting the breaths just as they are." It also says, "Like this, abiding in meditation by holding the coming and going breaths in mindfulness is called a being abiding in the true Dharma meaning, and is called meditating on meditation just as it is." The sutra says this with praise. In the Vinaya Origin, it also says, "The yogi, in equanimity, should count the entering breath, until the number of hundreds of thousands, constantly reciting without sound. The practitioner, reciting without sound, completes reciting hundreds of thousands of times, even if the lifespan decreases by five years, will survive, there is no doubt about this." and so on (285). Therefore, here, according to the previous posture and viewing method, calm the mind, and allow the breath of the nostrils to slowly go in and out without being rough, noisy, or agitated. When the breath goes out, be mindful; when the breath comes in, be mindful, and do not let the mind wander to other things. At first, focus on about three breaths, then focus on about five breaths, then focus on about seven breaths, according to your ability, and practice with a little rest in between. Eventually, practice until you can continuously grasp about a hundred breaths with mindfulness. This method, if the previous practice of abiding-mind has been accomplished, then it is training its ability; even if it has not been accomplished, it is a wonderful oral instruction for finding abiding-mind, so it is important to practice diligently. Second, in general, there are two ways to fill with breath: filling naturally, and making it into vase breath (286). In the Vajra Dakini Tantra, it says, "By filling with breath, purify the body, eliminate toxins and heat in the body. If you bind the vase breath, it will block the doorways." and so on. In the Vinaya Origin, it says, "Or by practicing vase breath, one can conquer death in all places. Oneself, with wisdom, fills all the way to the soles of the feet with breath, relying on the vase breath." It says this. If you want to make it into vase breath,
