Regarding the determination of practicing the ground and path and how to maintain that practice, firstly: From the five dharmas of the Part of Conformity with Liberation spoken of in the Compendium of Abhidharma, one should train in them. Among these, the discipline of an ordinary being is: turning the mind back from thoughts and actions that harm others at their root, and habituating oneself to the mind of abandoning them, is the practice of discipline. As it says in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "Wherever there are fish, etc., drive them away without killing them. From obtaining the mind of abandonment, it is said to be the perfection of discipline." Thus, holding with mindfulness and awareness (253), like the precepts of how to obtain the vows of a layperson, etc., and also abandoning all blameworthy misdeeds, one must carefully guard discipline with mindfulness. As it says in the Letter to a Friend: "Discipline is like the earth that produces and does not produce, it is well said to be the root of all good qualities." And as it says in the Sutra Possessing Discipline: "Just as without eyes one cannot see forms, so without discipline one cannot see the Dharma." Thus it is taught. Guarding the doors of the senses is: relying on the six objects such as forms and the six faculties such as the eyes, after the six sense consciousnesses arise, the mind consciousness again generates attachment to the six pleasing objects and aversion to the six displeasing objects, restraining these, not grasping at characteristics, not grasping at secondary characteristics, guarding against attachment and aversion, and placing the mind in virtue or the unspecified (254), as it says in the sutra: "The eyes see forms, not grasping at characteristics, not grasping at secondary characteristics." Thus and so on it is taught. Acting with awareness is: whatever actions one engages in, such as the actions of the body, whether it is to be done or not to be done, and its acceptance and rejection, acting mindfully and knowingly with mindfulness, as it says in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "The state of body and mind, should be examined again and again, this alone, in short, is the characteristic of guarding awareness." And as it says in the Compendium: "Walking, moving, sleeping, and sitting, be fully endowed with awareness." And as it says in the sutra: "When walking, one knows well 'I am walking.' When standing, one knows well 'I am standing.' When sitting, one knows well 'I am sitting.'" Thus and so on it is widely taught, and the necessity is, as it says in the Ratnakuta Sutra: "Mindfulness"

If mindfulness and awareness are constantly relied upon, the aspects of wrong thoughts cannot approach. Thus it is. Moderation in food (255): Too little food leads to hunger and weakness, etc., and too much leads to heaviness of body and increased drowsiness, etc. Consuming indigestible and unsuitable food causes new and old diseases, which make the body unsuitable for virtuous deeds. Food with afflictions such as attachment and aversion creates faults and makes the mind unsuitable for practice. Therefore, to maintain a moderate state of the body, one should consume food that is free from these, like medicine. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: Food should be taken like medicine, with wisdom, without attachment or aversion, not for fatness, not for pride, not for beauty, but only for the sake of maintaining the body. Thus it is. This depends on contemplating the faults of craving for food. That is, no matter what food is eaten, the moment it is eaten, it becomes as repulsive as vomit, and it generates diseases and impure substances in the body (256), which must eventually be expelled. For the sake of food and the source of food, much hardship and suffering arise. It generates the three poisons of attachment, aversion, and ignorance, which lead to the creation of sins, etc., and ultimately to falling into the lower realms, etc., one should contemplate. Even moderate enjoyment should be done with the thought of benefiting the donor, nourishing the worms in the body, and accomplishing the welfare of sentient beings, as the noble Asanga said. Not sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night, but striving in yoga: During the entire day and the upper and lower parts of the night, which is divided into three parts, one should cultivate diligence in practicing yoga with mindfulness and awareness. As it is said in the Compendium: Through diligence, white qualities do not diminish, and one will obtain the treasury of the Victorious One's boundless wisdom. And as it is said in the Letter to a Friend: The wise one, during the entire day, and also in the first and last parts of the night, should remember, and even when sleeping, it should not be fruitless, but with mindfulness (257), sleep in between. Thus it is. What kind of conduct is implied here for sleeping? There are four ways for that, among which the bodily conduct is: dividing the night into three parts, in the middle part, placing the right side down, the left leg
