One should lie down on the right side in the lion's posture. It is said that by doing so, the body will not become lax, one will not fall into a deep sleep, one will not forget mindfulness even when falling asleep, and one will not dream of sinful and bad things in dreams. Mindfulness is: Before falling asleep, one should cultivate the mindfulness of the goal that one intends to do during the day. It is said that this can lead you to virtue even when falling asleep. Awareness is: When cultivating mindfulness, if afflictions etc. arise, one should know them and abandon them. It is said that this reduces confusion in sleep and dreams. The intention to wake up is: Because sleep increases (258), the elements that strengthen the body increase, and after sleeping for only a short while just to strengthen the body, one should think, "Tomorrow I will get up on time and strive for virtue," and then make such a wish. And, generate the sign of light and focus on it to fall asleep. It is said that this prevents darkness from falling into the mind, makes sleep light, wakes one up on time, and also increases the effort of virtue tomorrow. The second is: Generally, it is said that one can do two or three sessions of virtuous practice, but more often it is said to be four sessions. This is also the tradition of the Kagyu lineage. That is, it is said that one must fix the four times of morning, forenoon, afternoon, and evening as sessions. For each session, one must also know the practice of the preliminary, main part, and concluding part. The preliminary is: If there are objects of refuge, one should set out offerings in front of them without stinginess, as much as one can afford. Sit on a comfortable seat and relax the body and mind well. Cut off the mental elaborations of other desires (259). Because if you offer mental elaborations, its influence will definitely cause faults when cultivating the main part of the virtuous practice. Then, one must enter into virtuous practice with the mind of enlightenment. This makes all the virtuous deeds done during the main part turn into the cause of enlightenment. The main part is: Cultivate the objects of thought such as the contemplation of impermanence mentioned above, and whatever the objects with signs and without signs that will be explained. Whatever the number and order of the objects to be cultivated, one must keep them in mind. Do not be distracted by other things.

Generate a strong desire to avoid losing sight of the various objects of focus that have been established. Then, with mindfulness and awareness, properly maintain the number and order of the objects of focus. If this is not done, and one engages in various ways with objects of focus that are both established and not established, as well as with mindfulness and distraction (260), it is said that this will cause the mind to become scattered and make the virtuous practice of one's entire life flawed. Therefore, it is crucial to fully immerse the mind in the object of focus from the very beginning. Furthermore, for beginners, if one practices the object of focus for a long time from the start, the mind will be influenced by sinking and excitement. If the mind becomes scattered, it will be difficult to correct later, so the sessions should be short and frequent. As it is said: Short sessions are free from faults, frequent sessions increase qualities. Now, if one interrupts while the object of focus is still clear and then meditates again, there will be less fatigue and it will be easier to generate joy in meditation later. Otherwise, one will become bored with meditation and will not want to meditate later. After that, once it has become somewhat stable, one should gradually lengthen the duration of the sessions. Later, once one is accustomed to it, one should gradually increase one's endurance in meditation and enter into the flow. In any case, if one always only does short sessions, this will also cause the mind to become scattered, to the point that one will not be able to truly engage in virtuous practice for one's entire life. The subsequent (261) activity is: when ending a session, share the merit generated from practicing virtue with all sentient beings, and dedicate it as a cause for unsurpassed enlightenment, while making pure aspirations. It is said that in this way, the root of merit will not be interrupted and consumed, but will continue to grow. Then there are the breaks between sessions: as mentioned above, one should strive to uphold the precepts, guard the doors of the senses, and diligently engage in activities of accumulation and purification, such as the ten practices of Dharma, prostrations, and circumambulations. However, if one abandons practice and does not apply the effort of mindfulness and awareness to the objects of focus, but instead lets the mind run wild as it pleases, then there will not be much growth in virtue. Therefore, one should look at, contemplate, and repeatedly strive to maintain mindfulness of the Dharma that is related to it. In this way, from meditating on impermanence to the ultimate view (262) and practice of Mahamudra.
